JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct bacterial isolation experiments including media preparation and bacterial culturing
- Develop, optimize, and perform a range of biochemical tests to assess microbial phenotypes
- Set up and conduct plant growth promotion experiments (including planting seeds, preparing nutrient solutions, routine monitoring, recording measurements, and monthly hydroponic system sanitization)
- Input research data for analysis
- Conduct plate counts and dilution series to determine viable cell counts and shelf life testing
- Extract and purify bacterial genomic DNA
- General laboratory maintenance, cleaning, and sanitization of equipment
- Maintain lab inventory and shipping/receiving
- Assist with inoculant production pipeline including setup, fermentation, QA, and bottling
- Train incoming coop students on basic laboratory techniques
- Conduct literature reviews and write key findings from peer reviewed papers
- Set up infrastructure for upcoming plant trials
- Contribute to publications, patents, SOPs and regulatory documents
SKILL REQUIREMENTS
Required Skills:
- Technical microbiology experience (plate streaking, pipetting, plate pouring, media prep, aseptic technique, etc.)
- Ability to work independently
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Good problem solving skills
- Self motivated
- Eager to learn and develop new skills
- Experience with Google Sheets or Excel
Preferred Skills
- Experience growing plants (inside or outside of the lab)
- Experience with G-Suite
- Experience writing scientific papers or documents
Education:
Minimum BSc in Microbiology or related field

TRANSPORTATION
- 319 Victoria St. N, Kitchener is Ceragen's plant trial facility where the team will spend a portion of their time. This facility is a 20 min walk or 9 min bike ride from the 151 Charles St. location. Free parking is available at this location for all employees.
