Job Summary

  • Campus and Community Planning (C&CP) works collaboratively to create a vibrant and resilient campus for an engaged community on the traditional territory of the Musqueam people, taking a leadingedge approach to sustainability, engagement, community building, planning, design and development. C&CP is responsible for leading UBC's operational sustainability plans that set UBC's targets and actions for climate, transportation, waste and water, using UBC as a living lab for a sustainable future. These major plans for the UBC campus are endorsed by the UBC Board of Governors and have connections to many other UBC plans and strategies, including UBC's Strategic Plan, 20Year Sustainability Strategy, Inclusion Action Plan, Wellbeing Strategic Framework, and the UBC Climate Emergency Response, among others. C&CP collaborates and coordinates with many UBC partners, departments and units to advance and embed these goals across the university, including senior staff and leadership from UBC Financial Operations, the UBC Sustainability Initiative, Student Housing and Community Services, Safety and Risk Services, Human Resources, Communications and Marketing, Alma Mater Society, Building Operations, Energy and Water Services, the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers, UBC IT, and other units in C&CP and across UBC Okanagan. Strategic systemswide campus engagement and outreach is a key component of delivering on these critical sustainability and climate targets and commitments.
  • The Manager, Climate & Sustainability Engagement leads the strategic planning, development, and oversight of C&CP's campuswide engagement programs, initiatives, campaigns, strategies and other outreach that address UBC's ambitious goals and targets for climate action and sustainability. These programs facilitate the creation of a culture of sustainability on campus; encourage adoption of high impact carbon reduction and resource conservation behaviours amongst staff, faculty and students; and directly support implementation of UBC's campuswide sustainability plans and policies, including the Climate Action Plan, Zero Waste Action Plan, Transportation Plan, and Engagement Strategy.
  • The position responsibilities include strategic planning, coordination and facilitating implementation of engagement and outreach programs that will play a key role in achieving the targets of UBC's new Climate Action Plan 2030 (CAP2030), a major priority area of the university's Climate Emergency Response. CAP2030 will have significantly expanded impact relative to previous plans, including accelerated GHG reduction targets for campus operations, and expansion of targets to include "extended impacts emissions" areas outside of core UBC operations. These extended impact emissions sources include business air travel, commuting, food and waste (which also incorporates procurement and reuse). Engagement programs are critical to address these extended impact areas, as reducing these emissions is dependent on staff, faculty and students' actions and choices. The position also plays an important role in campuswide communications related to the Climate Emergency and CAP2030, through collaborations with communications staff in C&CP and other departments.
  • The position is responsible for overseeing, creating new and developing updates to Campus & Community Planning sustainability and climate engagement programs, including those within the Workplace Sustainability portfolio (e.g. Sustainability Coordinator and Sustainable Offices), Zero Waste portfolio, and student engagement portfolio, that address UBC's strategic priorities, sustainability and climate goals across campus through staff, faculty and student engagement. The position plays an important role in guiding and supporting the Green Labs program, Sustainability in Residence and other engagement programming within Student Housing and Community Services, Zero Waste/Sort it Out, and several substantial emerging programs led or coled by C&CP with community climate action and carbon reduction behavioural/social change co
