Electric Cars. Be Careful
What You Wish For

In the beginning, |, like many others people | know, got
very excited at the prospect of electric cars. And why
not? They were the next big thing. A chance for the
world to cut way down on carbon pollution. A quieter
drive and the feeling that you were really doing your bit
for the environment by owning one.

Then, bit by bit, the reality of this innovation started
to set it. People started looking at the horrendous cost,
water usage and environmental damage caused by the
mining and processing of the lithium needed to make
the batteries for these cars. Other people started looking
at the availability of charging stations and the amount
of time it would take out of your day to charge your car.
Still other people started looking down the road at what
happens to the lithium batteries when they need to be
replaced and how much will it cost to actually replace
them.

But even with all those questions, the world still
continued to be excited about the possibilities. So
excited that countries started setting deadlines for the
end of gasoline powered vehicles.

At some point, while all this was going on, | started
to wonder if this whole thing wasn't just some crazy
capitalist scheme to create a profitable new industry
and aftermarket. And if you're wondering the same
thing, don't think you're all alone.

Our Sustainable Future
