THINKING OUT LOUD - VOLUME 9
THE GREAT SOCIAL MEDIA HOODWINK

Just noticed that Facebook has laid off 11,000
people. Twitter even more. The reason for this is
that advertising revenues are shrinking and a lot of
advertisers, who were willing to sink big bucks in
the social-media-as-advertising-medium idea have
discovered that it's nowhere near as all fired great
as the people who sold them on it sell them on it
promised it would be.

There are, IMHO, a couple of reasons for this. One
is that the advertising sucks. It takes a long time to
figure out what people will respond to in what media.
Companies like Facebook really don’t have the kind
of expertise and intuition to actually do that. So they
make a lot of shit up as they go along.

The second reason is that it's getting harder to tell
the legitimate advertisers from the scammers, and so
what you have are a lot of potential consumers

wandering through social media in a state of

confusion, even anger if they have been scammed
a time or two.

The solutions are simple. Advertisers and their
agencies need to stop blindly following whatever
instructions the social media sites give them and get
innovative again. Creativity is the lifeblood of adver-
tising and on social media, it just ain't there.

And the social media sites need to stop being so
damn greedy and start saying no to

the scammers, which is something

they are simply not doing these days. Science and Technology
