r -— | 4 «3 | CHARLIE WILSON'S z= WAR CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR 3 SPUDS on NETFLIX WIKI BLURB: Charlie Wilson's War is a 2007 Amer- ican biographical comedy-drama film, based on the story of U.S. Congressman Charlie Wilson and CIA operative Gust Avrakotos, whose efforts led to Operation Cyclone, a program to organize and support the Afghan mujahideen during the Soviet Afghan War MY TWO CENTS: I'm surprised that | had not seen this movie until now as | am a big fan of Aaron Sorkin, who | believe is one of the great political screenwriters in the history of cinema. I'm also a big fan of everybody involved in it, like Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and especially Phillip Seymour Hoff- man, who, in my opinion, checked out way too soon This is a great little bit of history, extremely well told and in its own way, it really sums up the US political scene back in a time when the animus between the Dems and Republicans was actually something that could be worked with, instead of the hate-filled gang war it is now. But it’s also a story based on US politicians who actually had some empathy for the suffering they were seeing even though it was half a world away. Mike Nichols, who is also no longer with us, was one of those directors who could take a powerful social issue and make it easily understood, by just about anyone.
