A Brief Lesson About Canada...
This graphic was found on Reddit and came to my attention through Col. Chris Hadfield - one of Canada's preeminent astronauts and generally cool guy.
Given it's Canada's 150th birthday this year, I thought I'd share it with my global beBee Community.
This map shows our country of Canada broken down by counties or regions.
Based on census data, 50% of Canadians live in the red areas.
Since Canada is the second largest country ( 9.985 million km² ) in the world by land mass, that leaves a lot of wide open spaces. We beat out the US by a few ( 9.834 million km²).
If you want to get away from it all, it's not too difficult.

Here are some of the details from the Reddit post by DonOntario (for those too lazy to click through).
Sources:
- A blank map of "census divisions of Canada" from Wikimedia Commons
- 2011 Canadian Census list of the census divisions of Canada ranked by population.
Notes:
- Several provinces in Canada do not have counties, but the census has defined what level of local government is considered the equivalent of a county in those places. They call them 'census divisions', whatever they are called in the different provinces.
- This is a map of the top-sixteen most populous counties (and equivalent districts), just enough to contain 50% of the population. It is not the same thing as the most populous cities or metropolitan areas.
- 10 out of 16 are in southern Ontario.
- 5 out of the 16 are, at least partially, in the GTA (Greater Toronto metropolitan area).
- Toronto, ON (City)
- Greater Vancouver, BC (Regional District - includes Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond, Coquitlam, Langley and many other smaller municipalities.)
- Montreal, QC (City of Montreal plus smaller municipalities on the island)
- Division No. 6, AB (Calgary and surrounding towns)
- Peel, ON (Regional Municipality, includes Mississauga and Brampton)
- Division No. 11, AB (Edmonton and surrounding towns)
- York, ON (Regional Municipality, includes Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Aurora, Newmarket)
- Ottawa, ON (City)
- Division No. 11, MB (Winnipeg Capital Region)
- Durham, ON (Regional Municipality, includes Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa)
- Quebec, QC (City)
- Hamilton, ON (City)
- Waterloo, ON (Regional Municipality, includes Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo)
- Halton, ON (Regional Municipality, includes Burlington, Oakville)
- Simcoe, ON (County, includes Barrie)
- Middlesex, ON (County, includes London)
Total population of those 16 districts in the 2011 census: 16,782,521
Total population of Canada in the 2011 census: 33,476,688
