A Short Treatise on Keeping Your Eyes On Your Fries

I have a friend, and a very good one at that, who actually pays so little attention to the news that he had to be told by his wife of the US sponsored assassination of Iranian military commander, Qassem Soleimani.

He actually commented on one of my posts that he believed that since there was nothing he could do about this, or most of the other nasty shit that’s happening in the world, why should he really put himself through the mental anguish of knowing about it.

And that, despite, my initial thoughts about things like willful ignorance being the root enabler of a lot of this activity, it turns out to be a very interesting question.

On the one hand, you could argue for this willful ignorance as something that, at least temporarily, ensures a certain amount of peace of mind.

One the other hand, you could also argue that this willful ignorance is what the powers that be count on in the majority of people in any given country, which, as we have seen, leads to all kinds of bad shit.

Nobody Knows Nuttin’

Nobody knows for sure where this will lead. But there is certainly no shortage of speculation and conspiracy theories. I prefer the more logical approach to this, and when you do, you have to first acknowledge one important thing about the man who set all of this in motion. He does not have the best interest of the US in mind, because he’s incapable of any level of empathy.

What he does have in mind, however, and what powers most of the major decisions he makes, is how it will enrich him and benefit him with the group of sadly deluded souls who make up his support base.

Let’s forget about the base because they are what they are and their opinion will never change.

But what enriches him is the key. If you don’t believe that this was simply a ploy to boost the value of stocks of companies that make up the US’ military industrial complex, from which he and all his political supporters will benefit from vie heavy insider trading…

And if you don’t think the further destabilization of the Middle East will benefit both the US and Russia financially, then you really need to pack up your tent and move into the deluded souls camp.

This Is All About The Benjamins

Nothing Trump does is not about money. He destroys public education in the US, so that he gets kickbacks from private schools. Do nothing about the opioid crisis and runaway drug prices and get kickbacks from their lobbyists. Push absurdities like clean coal and slam the shit out of renewables and get money from all the fossil fuel companies.

All this Iranian assassination amounts to is more payola from the defense industry for keeping the the big military machine fat and happy. Forget about the human toll.

They’re nothing more than cannon fodder, and paradoxically, the sons and daughters of the willfully apathetic.

 How That Works

This isn’t a conspiracy, it’s the nutshell version of how things get done in America and, more or less, always have.

The sad part is that while they used to be done by presidents and politicians who were at least willing to be part of the larger world, it’s all being done now by a malignant narcissist whose delusions of grandeur are so massive that he doesn’t believe the United States needs to be part of anything.

This progressive isolation will eventually reach a tipping point when the lack of trust being created eventually forces countries around the world to decide whether or not they want to keep doing business with this kind of America.

This is especially dangerous to the US,, when countries like China are offering the same stuff and are willing to create a more reasonable trading environment.

Ask any economist who is not owned by or allied to a political movement and they will tell you the same thing.

All the Trump administration is doing is creating instability in the world and profiteering from it.

It really is the lowest form of human behaviour, and it’s not surprising that’s it’s coming from a country that has managed to dumb down a substantial portion of its people in order to play this game that only benefits the rich and the major corporations, and does less than nothing for anyone who is not one of those.

And so to my willfully ignorant friend, whose attitude I respect, despite disagreeing with it, I have a half dozen well-chosen, copywriter-created words of advice….

I have almost totally lost faith in America's ability to pull up its socks and do the right thing.

If only ignorance were bliss. If we don't "keep our eyes on our fries" we'll see the inevitable decline in civilization. Historically, this has happened before, and the cyclical nature of history suggests it will happen again. Greed and stupidity will drag us down—perhaps it already has. The next 12 months will be interesting if not discouraging. Hopefully—and I seriously mean hopefully—we won't let that happen. It's a long shot, though.
