A simple and elegant definition of business...

A simple and elegant definition of business...

I asked this question to a seasoned businessperson the other day, "How do you define business?"

His answer wasn't exactly what I had expected.

For him, business is defined as "cashing the cheque" that was given as payment for an activity that had been agreed upon with someone(s). Business in his mind was not defined by what was being done or how, but by the actual transfer of money from one person to another. It was that simple in his mind.

Some clarification was needed on his part because it just didn't sit well with me that there seemed to be little consideration given to what and how something was being done for that "cheque".

It was then pointed out that there was up front consideration to what he would (and wouldn't) do based on legal, moral, ethical or personal reasons, but in theory it could be wide open as to what activities were part of this definition, and that was an individual decision. In his mind it wasn't about what you did that defined business but it was about the transfer of money. We didn't discuss the definition of money but I suspect that if "chickens" were the agreed upon currency, his definition would be satisfied.

Putting aside the opportunity for endless discussions on ethics, morality, legality, good or bad, there is something simple, clean, and direct about his definition. The more I thought about it, the more I began to believe he was spot on, and I did like the elegance of its simplicity. If we agree the goal in business is to make money, then everything else is just activity — If your activity results in a cheque that you can cash then it's business; if it doesn't, then it's just activity (or an expensive hobby).

In the end the goal of business is to make money, make more money, and make it faster.

Underlying this I suppose is all that sales, marketing, finance, operations, human resources, regulatory interpretation, et cetera that goes on each and every day. Cashing that cheque is a reminder to do it better, faster and more innovatively because that's how you stay in business.

Coincidently, a couple of days later I ran into another seasoned businessperson who defined business as "an enterprise or endeavour designed to create value for stake holders, or something like that".

If anything, I was reminded that people look at things differently so you need to stay sharp!

Business any action or enterprise undertaken for profit. In the age of Internet banking cheques are the monetary equivalent of "snail mail".

Great insight and comments Harvey Lloyd... you are right it really is very complicated and I think that is why I like the simplicity of the cashing of the cheque as the sum of everything. The cheque itself is a symbol of trust of you think about it... a trust that it can be cashed, that someone will recognize it has value, etc. We have come a long way from trading a chicken for a bushel of wheat.

Thanks for the comment Devesh Bhatt. There is a simplicity in it and then we can complicated it all by what it takes to keep the cheques coming, how to get more and how to make them bigger.... lol

Thanks for the note @Jean-Yves Piton. you are right about business vs good business; what I like about this simple definition is it can be measured in "more cheques"... lol

Your post here brings forward a very complicated process. Business is about cashing the check. If we wander back to when civilization didn't have money and banded into groups for survival i believe we can get a better understanding of businesses roots. The first cities brought about the non-group commerce. A stationary place where goods were exchanged, changed the landscape of group self containment. Individuals within the group could now barter outside of the group and have a different lifestyle than the group. The individual now owned their efforts and outcomes. Fast forward a few millennia and we find ourselves cashing checks that others pay. This is neither good or bad, but represents the disconnect from the group. Oddly enough the cashing of the check process is the stimulus for political unrest within the group. However politics wants to connect the cashed check to the business, while the business wants to show the check as part of the groups barter system.

But i also cashed a cheque on payday? If we see a dictionary meaning too then business is no different from work occupation or trade, it only has to be regular. Regular occupation is explained as work or trade that serves as the main source of income...ultimately the first definition is more accurate than the second one. I agree and i would see business as anything that results in cashing the cheque regularly. On the other hand many definitions may emerge as an outcome of specific context and personal experience. If i hadnt read your buzz, i would have missed out on the simplicity.
So...The business was growing so quickly it was getting new cheques faster than it could keep up with the cash in. 😂😂😂😂😂

Great share Graham. Indeed, the textbook definition is black and white and focuses on the exchange of products/services between parties for money. While a straightforward answer, the consummate business professionals also know the difference between "business" and "good business". One that solves a need and adds value that is.
