Are You Fostering An Innovative Culture?

4 Steps to foster an innovative culture in your organisation:

  • Listen: Strive to ask the extra question to challenge yourself and others to go deeper and stretch further. Seek diverse viewpoints. Constant inquiry and questions form the language of innovation.
  • Risk Failure:  Have the courage to fail and accelerate through failure.  Make sure that your behaviours, are not barriers to risk experimentation. Make sure your key people are encouraged to spend time exploring  new ideas.
  • Foster Mentorship:  Take the time to connect, coach, mentor, and develop your people. Always challenge their thinking, and behaviour through innovation. Create stretch goals and coach people to grow a community of innovation.
  • Be Authentic:  The innovation potential of teams or organisations will be limited to your own innovation commitment. Make sure your own behaviours are not unintentionally limiting an innovation culture around you. Always ask yourself: “How can I encourage even more innovation here?” Be the innovation community builder you wish to see in your organisation.

I agree with these perspectives @Donald Grandy. The craziness enters when self preservation kicks in with the team. Each will look at the innovation from their perspective. I myself have been trapped by this spirit. A team member comes in with an innovative idea but I dismiss it based on their poor understanding of other parts of the business. I usually go back and make time to hear what they are presenting. The challenge is to get the team to let their guard down. The best way is to come up with scheduled time and places to "brainstorm". The rules are that whatever someone comes up with has to focus on the goal of the team at that time. Thanks for the read it was good stuff.
