Bluff City Law…Another Victim of Network Cowardice

MA ur

COPYRIGHT 2019, ONWORDS & UPWORDS INC. JIM MURRAY, PROP.Last night, we watched the third episode of an outstanding series, that of course, the network assholes at NBC have refused to pick up after its 10 episode run in complete.

This legal series, Bluff City Law, stars Jimmy Smits as the owner of a Memphis Law firm whose chief litigator, besides himself, is his daughter (Caitlin McGee). This series is really compelling, because it is so local and the cases they get are very interesting for that reason.

But last night’s episode was especially moving. It was a case brought to the firm by a 12 year old girl whose town, right on the Mississippi, had recently been flooded by water that had been diverted downstream from a levee created to protect a more affluent community than hers.

The trial started off with the firm suing the Army Corps of Engineers, and through an astounding amount of buck passing, the defendant list grew to include everyone involved with the planning and construction of the upstream levee, including the Environmental Protection agency.

What this story did was pointed out just how little accountability (and corruption) there is in public projects in the US, and, more importantly, just how little willingness there was for these different groups, both public and private, to cooperate with each other, and think things through, as opposed to just doing their part, without any real concerns about the human toll their decisions could take.

As I was watching this, I could not help put think about the recent events in Syria, and the severe ramifications of a poorly thought-out political decision and the toll it will ultimately take on the US in terms of accountability, credibility and the trust of any allies they may have left.

ea39f117.pngAt the end of the trial, all that was needed for Jimmy Smits’ firm to win the case was simply pointing out that this needless displacement of people and the ruin of their lives may have never happened if all of the involved parties had just sat down and figured it out together.

Sadly, at the top of the US political food chain, you have an individual who completely lacks the intelligence, empathy, knowledge or leadership ability to do this. All he has is an overabundance of ego that powers his belief that only he can solve the problem.

The Bluff City Law episode was really a metaphor for just how chaotic things have become in America these days. And I have no doubt that the clarity with which the show points that out may very well have been the final nail in its coffin. Advertising revenue driven networks have historically shown more than share of fear about shows like this.

I hope Bluff City Law gets picked up by one of the zillion or so streaming services, because it’s actually a series that is about something human, and we really need more of that, not less.

Just as I hope the people of the US will come together and get rid of the world huge leadership void that has been created by their current president.
