Commencement Speech: Matt Damon
What I thought was going to be a rather lousy commencement speech exploded into life at about the 8th minute of the video. I love Matt Damon's role playing a genius in Good Will Hunting where in early scenes he obtains a janitors job at MIT. The reality has he points out is that he never finished his degree at Harvard, but dropping out hardly hurt him, and his phenomenal movie star success adds to the great storybook of successful dropouts.
His humanitarian work demonstrates a high level of human consciousness and social action. Once Damon was focused on that, the first eight minutes of fawning to the MIT crowd and the pointless pandering ceased and Damon was in his element, in an area where he has made a difference, and he has even though in certain guest appearances he has starred in, he opts for a sense of humour rather than full-blooded seriousness, the kind we see in fervent activists. The House of Lies clip is a good example of Damon knowing when to laugh, and when to take life seriously.
What is important here is noting the difference when he is laid back and not really caring what the audience think, to the complete opposite where he walks the walk that he talks. Like any speech this commencement can be evaluated in the way Toastmaster members learn to evaluate. At the Sheridan Club level a commencement speech is still a speech, so each club member can evaluate it as if they are evaluating a speech from one of the 15 advanced manual series anyone who is eligible to begin the advanced speaker series (bronze, silver and gold)
The advanced speech program is offered to those who complete a 10 speech program called Competent Communicator. While none of the 15 manuals deal directly with how to deliver a commencement speech, there are elements found within them that can help, depending on the 6 manuals a club member chooses from any of these 15 advanced manual speech options. Each manual consists of 10 speeches.

Yes Dean, in the first 8 minutes Damon for whatever reason is known to him decides to take the awe out of the audience and instead humble himself by exalting his audience. That usually works with a God fearing crowd but it level sets an M.I.T. audience. As he first walked to the lecturn the crowd was his for the taking, after all for many of those M.I.T. audience, this was not simply Matt Damon walking onto the stage, but in part their attachment to the character Damon made famous in Good Will Hunting. He decided to let the audience know early "I am not Will Hunting", yet in terms of humanitarian and ecological problems, Damon is. This is the M.I.T. crowd which will make the big money that could fund future Damon initiatives - and that is where the parallel between Damon and Will Hunting is poignant, in the movie Will Hunting denies his own brilliance, in a way Damon denied his own brilliance also - the audience still loved him but he did not build on the awe, he fizzled it.
