CPC TV GUIDANCE: Mr Robot Season 2
Just watched the first two episodes of season 2 of Mr Robot. Unbeknownst to me, my wife almost immediately put on her headphones and started watching something on Netflix on her IPad. That kind of summed things up for me too. While the first season was all bright and shiny and sinister, I kind of got the feeling that they were left with nowhere to really go, and they proved it. These episodes merely followed Elliot around while he attempted to straighten himself out by adhering to a strict routine and keeping a detailed journal.
In other words. It was boring as batshit. Yeah there was a bit of weird Anonymous stuff, but basically it was really nothing special.
Now I didn’t just fall off the turnip truck, and I am a marketer so I can see what’s going on here. They are appealing to that lost generation of millennial propeller heads and I am about as far removed from that target audience as you can be while still sucking oxygen out of the air. So I probably shouldn’t even be attempting to write about this stuff.
But I do and what I saw was basically a dark, dingy and totally hopeless world, where fighting back against the ‘establishment’ was the principal occupation.
Well, I come from the generation that invented fighting back against the establishment, and I think Mr Robot really does have a long way to go in terms of making that concept work long term. Maybe not for a much younger audience whose standards haven’t yet been developed to any degree. But for seasoned TV watchers, it really does not live up to either its first season or its second season hype.
