Do you believe in angels?

Do you believe in angels?

I am not a believer in angels or other supernatural beings that other believe influence our lives. I have relatives and friends who do and they have many times pointed out to me that angels can and do walk among us. When I asked for proof, they refer me to the Bible. It is interesting that in the Bible, there are a few times when men and angels appear to have interacted. So I did some research on this topic and found the following from www.gotquestions.org

In the Bible, angels appear to people in unpredictable and various ways. From a casual reading of Scripture, a person might get the idea that angelic appearances were somewhat common, but that is not the case. There is an increasing interest in angels today, and there are many reports of angelic appearances. Angels are part of almost every religion and generally seem to have the same role as messenger. In order to determine whether angels appear today, we must first get a biblical view of their ancient appearances.

The first appearance of angels in the Bible is in Genesis 3:24 when Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden. God placed cherubim to block the entrance with a flaming sword. The next angelic appearance is in Genesis 16:7, about 1,900 years later. Hagar, the Egyptian servant who bore Ishmael to Abraham, was instructed by an angel to return and submit to her mistress, Sarai. Abraham was visited by God and two angels in Genesis 18:2 when God informed him of the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The same two angels visited Lot and instructed him to escape the city with his family before it was destroyed (Genesis 19:1-11). The angels in this case also displayed supernatural power by blinding the wicked men who were threatening Lot.

I also found these references to angels in the Bible:

Hebrews 13:2 “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares"

Acts 5:17-21 “But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, “Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.” And when they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach.”

So for those of you who believe in angels or other supernatural beings, remember that angels, choose skillfully defined disguises and are well concealed from us and in their disguises, they, just want to help you get past judging by their looks.

These angels are not good looking, not much fun, and you would never guess they are angels come to test you. So, if you believe in angels, or if you do not believe in angels, my advice, always treat everyone the way you want to be treated. The person you are mistreating, making fun of or bullying could be an angel but more importantly, every soul is beautiful.

You raised a good point, Zacharias, about beauty being in the eye of the beholder.

Beauty is a bit relative when it comes to human perception. What is considered ugly by someone is astounding by someone else. Perhaps angels are not any different. As for how they appear in other cultures, I don't think they are that bad-looking. Take devas, for example, from the Hindu tradition. If you see statues of them, they look beautiful and very refined. Perhaps the idea that angels are ugly or otherwise strange is a fruit of the (usually bad) translation of the bible and/or some people's limited perception of them. However, I do agree with the final piece of advice about how we should treat others. After all, every human being is an angel in potential...
