DR. HOOK: Cover to Cover
Dr. Hook recorded many songs by the poet/children's book author, Shel Silverstein. In fact, their first album, Doctor Hook, contained all of Shel's songs but one; their second album, Sloppy Seconds, contained all of Shel's songs and their third album, Belly Up, contained all but four.
Shel Silverstein's "Queen of the Silver Dollar" was first recorded by Dr. Hook on their 1972 album, Sloppy Seconds, and later by Doyle Holly (on his 1973 album, Doyle Holly), Barbi Benton (on her 1974 album, Barbi Doll), Emmylou Harris (on her 1975 album, Pieces of the Sky), Dave & Sugar (on their 1976 album, Dave & Sugar) and Billie Jo Spears (on her 1981 album, Country Girl). The song was also sung by other country singers, such as Buck Owens.
Here's Dr. Hook's version with Dennis Locorriere on lead:
Here's Dr. Hook Featuring Ray Sawyer:
Dave & Sugar was a pop-styled country music trio consisting of lead singer Dave Rowland and various female singers over the years. The trio enjoyed its peak success in the mid- to late-1970s.
The trio's first single, "Queen of the Silver Dollar" broke into the Top 25 of Billboard magazine's country singles chart in early 1976. Their next single, "The Door Is Always Open", became their first Number 1 hit in July. They had nearly one dozen Top 10 singles, including two more Number 1 hits, "Tear Time" (1978) and "Golden Tears" (1979).
Rowland disbanded the trio briefly during the early 1980s to try a solo career, releasing an album entitled (appropriately) Sugar Free and charting two singles of his own. Rowland later reformed the trio.
Thanks for listening. See you next time.
