Greetings From The Dark Ages

Greetings From The Dark Ages

Your Story Well ToldThis is Jim. Actually it is Jim yesterday. Writing from the Dark Ages. You know the time before the Internet.
It’s my guess that a lot of you don’t remember that time. Maybe a lot of you were just knee high to a grasshopper back then. But I remember.
We have just taken possession of our new house on the north side of St Catharines. An empty U-Haul box van sits in the driveway. I am sitting at my wife’s craft table in the family room of our new home.I have just hooked up the computer to the TV so my wife, who will be staying here for the rest of the week, can at least have something to watch in the evenings. (via our ter
d9cf25e4.jpgrabyte drive filled with movies and TV series that she likes).
Oddly enough, my wife has an Internet connection through her phone.
Until our house is properly wired though, I will have to do things like I did tonight, drive down to Walmart and use their WiFi to check my email.
Being in the Dark Ages is actually kind of nice.

You very quickly forget just why you spend so much time on line when you are concerned with moving a couple hundred pieces of your stuff from a box to a house. When you’re concerned with setting up an IKEA table, which is one of those accomplishments that always makes you feel good about yourself. And when you are concerned about whether or not you brought enough of those little steel cylinders to hold up your IKEA Ivar shelves.
Yep. It’s a whole other world. My sister, who now just lives two towns over and about 25 minutes away by car, brought us a bed for our guest room then took us for one of the best Thai dinners I have had in a long time.
My sister used to be a student driver for Brock University and so her knowledge of St Catharines is formidable. This really comes in handy when you are trying to figure out a new place.
My wife has been going at the kitchen for the last few hours, finding places to put everything and making little notes on stuff we are going to hire a handyman to fix for us. Because I don’t do that shit anymore. Everything else is in the dining room because as soon as the flooring arrives from La Belle Province, men with knee pads and mitre saws will be coming to take up all the old flooring in the 3 bedrooms and my office and put the new stuff in.
I am in a state of near exhaustion here in the Dark Ages
. I have to get back to Toronto tomorrow because I have a whole bunch of stuff to send out on Wednesday, and a bunch more stuff to do on top of that.
I remember that I was really busy the last time we moved as well. Maybe moving is the charm. Although I don’t recommend it.
Anyway, we’re hoping that by the week before Christmas all our stuff will be here, and this house will be completely wired.
So I can chat with the Beezers, watch Donald Trump ruin a perfectly good country, catch up on the Raptors, who are playing the mighty Cleveland Cavs tonight, rant on Facebook and blog right here on beBee, the best blogging site in the known universe.
But I have to tell you…A trip back to the Dark Ages is something I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who is stressed out by the bullshit of modern living. Turn off. Tune out. Relax.
This is Jim, signing off. I’m gonna go lay down now and read a book. I have much IKEAing to do tomorrow, and not much time to do it.

It is a scary thing when the mechanically challenged of the world hold up the assembly of an IKEA table as an engineering marvel of the industrialized world. Hopefully, your ordeal will end soon, and you will be able to settle down to enjoy your new premises. I'm in rant withdrawal.

Paul Walters My arm is worn out from twisting that Allan key. They would be much better advised to put a handle on it and give them out to everyone.

Jim Murray I have one of those little allan keys that Ikea give out to assemble the house that you purchased in a flat box. Want it? Did a campaign once for Ikea ( Outdoor) just showed a flat box with the headline " Swedish Take Aways " Someone in HQ in Stockholm thought it silly ! Enjoy your new home

Thanks Jerry Fletcher. I hear you've got some weather going on out there. I'm hoping winter holds off until the 19th when I am moving.

Jim, As another survivor of those dark ages I frequently try to time-slip to those better times in the evening. My biggest problem is that I never remember to shut down the ring tones on my smart phone. It is at it's worst at 6 AM here in Oregon when the e-mail feed starts to pump it up as the East coast kicks into gear. And so it goes.

I won't really be disconnected after we move in officially and frankly, there is always Tim Hortons, Starbucks, MacDonalds, Wally World even Home Depot if you need to get on line,

Jim Murray It's understandable how disconnected you must be feeling, with this transition. Moving from one place to another...though you may find the new place adventurous, exciting, but it will still make you a person as if you are battling to find some remedy and tips for staying busy. Aha...experience the dark ages, and being aloof from connectivity, recall your past and observe the present to pen down some inspiring posts! :)

Thanks for the scintillating comment @Randy Keho. I can always count on you for the big cliches.

I thought only hippies, communists, and pinkos paraphrased Timothy Leary. Next thing you know, you'll be quoting from "The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test."
