Insights from an unexpected life coach...

Insights from an unexpected life coach...

At this time of year you would be hard pressed to find anyone in Canada who hasn’t started to think about winter

c0007aa7.jpgI’ll be shameless and will say, “winter is coming” — and with the approaching season, we also find ourselves thinking about hockey. We watch it, we play it, and some literally live it
it’s a national sport after all.

Hockey is a game I wasn’t particularly good at, haven’t played for years, and as a fan, not interested in anymore — probably because (as I said) I wasn’t very good at it. Interestingly enough though, I found myself at a hockey complex the other day (where I sometimes train) and was drawn to a hockey practice. A group of young players who were down on one knee listening to their coach.

I was inspired.

A coach’s passion offered insight into something much bigger than just hockey —

 • Have a strong body.

 • Have a strong mind.

 • Work very hard.

 • Someone will always be watching — use any feedback to be better.

 • Do something — it is better than doing nothing.

DO something
it is better than doing “nothing”
 • Take that trip.

 • Take the CFO gig.

 • Quit that job and travel the world.

 • Build that house.

 • Be that lover.

 • Propose to that girl.

 • Start that company.

 • Be who you want to be.

 • Take that job, although you are scared “shitless”

 • Do something for fuck sake,

How you interpret this is up to you
all I ask is that you do something.

Thanks for the comment Neil Smith... you are spot on when you say it's much bigger than just being a good hockey player... thx for the perspective...

Thanks for the comment and insights CityVP 🐝 Manjit... ya it does seem our athletes and getting bigger, faster, stronger. The reasons are definitely up for debate but what I have observed is everyone seems to have a trainer... Ya hockey is definitely part of our cultural fabric and arguably the fastest game on the planet... sadly I'm not very good at it (although I still consider myself a Canadian)... lol

Graham, Pausing to listen was easy. Hearing what was said took skill. Sharing with us reflects your nature. And so it goes.

It seems like the guy you listened to was less of a hockey coach and more of a human coach Graham🐝 Edwards. Aside from points of technique the best sports advice is often universal. These pointers won't necessarily make someone a great hockey player but will make someone the best player they possibly could be. Applied to life in general and they may help make someone the best person they could be and perhaps that is the same as being the best person period.

Coincidentally my new Toastmasters club meets in a hockey arena meeting room. Last week it was the first time I came up close to boys who are a part of a hockey team, though "boys" does not do justice to the size of these young dudes. Either they have developed themselves naturally or they have taken horse hormones. The last time I saw guys built like a brick shithouse, it was a bunch of police detectives with Alsatian dogs that themselves looked like they had been fed on horse hormones - and that lot were on the hunt for someone in the woods near where we live. I also saw another meeting of hockey coaches and together with the Humboldt Broncos tragedy https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-43685217 - it is only now I am beginning to learn just how enmeshed and weaved Canadian village culture is that is centered around their hockey team. It is not noticeable in the urban areas of Toronto but I found new personal insights into just how deep the culture of hockey is in Canadian culture. Ironically, I am only learning this this year, despite being settled in Canada for the last 26 years. Being a Brit born soccer guy, hockey has not been a sport I have paid much attention to - but I now value its culture because it speaks to side of Canada that I obviiously missed for a quarter of a century 😊
