Mitochondria - Turning on the Machine

Mitochondria are known as the powerhouses of the cell. They are organelles (An organelle is a tiny cellular structure that performs specific functions within a cell) that act like a digestive system which takes in nutrients, breaks them down, and creates energy rich molecules for the cell. The biochemical processes of the cell are known as cellular respiration. Many of the reactions involved in cellular respiration happen in the mitochondria. Mitochondria are the working organelles that keep the cell full of energy.
Mitochondria are small organelles floating free throughout the cell. Some cells have several thousand mitochondria while others have none. Muscle cells need a lot of energy so they have loads of mitochondria. If a cell feels it is not getting enough energy to survive, more mitochondria can be created. Sometimes a mitochondria can grow larger or combine with other mitochondria. It all depends on the needs of the cell. Cells can also die in a process called apoptosis.

Apoptosis

Apoptosis is a form of cell death in which a programmed sequence of events leads to the elimination of cells without releasing harmful substances into the surrounding area. Apoptosis plays a crucial role in developing and maintaining the health of the body by eliminating old cells, unnecessary cells, and unhealthy cells. The human body replaces perhaps one million cells per second. Too little or too much apoptosis can play a role in many diseases. Cells can also be be repaired or replaced by a process called Autophagy.

Autophagy

Autophagy is a natural process in which the body destroys and breaks down its own cells and the structures within them. This might sound like something you want to avoid, but autophagy plays a crucial role in helping your body to deal with toxins, waste products, and damaged cells.

Most of our cells, however, do grow and replenish on a regular basis. In fact, the average human loses 300 million cells every minute! Depending on the tissue, our cells will be ‘dying’ and regenerating at different rates. In exposed tissues like the skin and gut, this cellular turnover is happening very quickly. Our red blood cells have a longer lifespan of three months. And our fat cells, as it turns out, have their own interesting life-cycle too.

Never underestimate how brilliant your body truly is. No machine on planet Earth comes close to comparison in complexity and genius. Make good nutritional choices to help your body stay healthy.
