Moments — the power and beauty of bookclub.

Moments — the power and beauty of bookclub.

The reason most people do not accomplish more is that they do not attempt more. The boy who does not read good books, who does not embrace every opportunity to extend his general knowledge, has no advantage over the boy who cannot read books and who does not have opportunity to extend his knowledge.
"Bulletin" of the National Association of Corporation Schools July 1915

Somehow I found myself part of a "bookclub" that reads business books. We get together after each book is read to discuss its major themes and what we gleaned from it — we also drink wine and beer, have something to eat, and discuss the merits of the latest superhero action movie.

The group consists mostly of people working on their MBA part time — although we are not all doing that. We are all there to learn, share our perspectives, meet new people, and build upon the opportunities that come with all of this.

Our last book club involved the merits of "discomfort" for personal growth and development (the book was The Beauty of Discomfort) — we also discussed our dreams for the future, the possibly of moving to China, the serendipity of common connections, a trip to Germany, and how the blockbuster superhero movies of 2018 will be amazing.

These were the conversations of people attempting to do more.

I'd like to thank Adrian, and Laura, and Victoria, and Behnam, and Renée, and Jenn, and Doug, and Robert — I am richer for the opportunity of book club.

Thanks for the comment ... there are a couple of people in the club that insist on books in audio. I hear you about time... I struggle to carve out some time to get on social media ... I've been so busy lately I don't get to appreciate a lot of the great content on beBee. I guess I could stop sleeping... lol

Thanks for the comment Harley King. I also find autobiographies informative at many levels.

Thanks for the comment CityVP 🐝 Manjit... I hear you with your concern... we have read three books so far a) The Power of Habit b) The beauty of discomfort and c) some gawd awful book on leadership that was so badly written I refused to read it (although some liked it). One of the other things I get out of the book club is the Y generation perspective, their energy and simply learning things I didn't know. I am definitely having fun with it.

Thanks for the comment Don 🐝 Kerr — it sounds like maybe you are just reading the wrong business books... here's a list The Art of War ... 3000 plus years old and still does a great job transferring principles to business On Search of Excellence ... the examples are a little dated but the principles and models hold up after 30 years Any Six Sigma or lean book (Functional Excellence) Management of Organizational Behaviour (Situational Leadership) The Leader who had no title Who moved my cheese (change management) The little red book of sales Anything by Zig Ziglar Hope is not a strategy (plus it's a pithy saying) SWAY: The irresistible pull of irrational behaviour (this actually came up at book club) The beauty of discomfort (which started this buzz) If none of these books work for you then maybe you just aren't really interested in business (they ain't fiction) — and that's OK. I also read autobiographies and fantasy/SciFi so any recommendations are appreciated.

You got me interested because you said "business books". The trouble with business book clubs is that there may be material that members may pick that would have my eyes rolling especially with a many leadership books. I am betting that a book club with kindred spirits would be the immediate challenge but I like that this particular book club is a part of a niche group like MBA students, and so that has got me thinking about possibilities as they pertain to my own learning pathways.

Graham🐝 Edwards You had me right up until 'Business books'. God bless you and rock on my friend. I'm gonna stick with fantasy and fiction that admits it is such. Wait - that sounds harsh and I don't mean it to. I rather meant that I find so many business books to be 'of the moment' with little foundation in proven results. The best business book I ever read was Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Quite seriously would love your recommendations on something more current and relevant.
