My Last Letter To America

My Last Letter To America

a40779d3.jpg

To whom it may concern:

I know you. I have known you all my life. Though I have not lived in your country, I have kept a close eye on you.

You were founded in war and you continued to be a warrior nation ever since. You have created a war machine that is second to none in the world.

You have created an economy that is the same.

You have been responsible for some of the world’s great innovations and you have profited from them immensely.

But on the other side of the coin, you are the most wasteful nation in the history of the world. And a lot of it has to do with the idea that the richer you are the more you are ‘entitled’ to behave irresponsibly, because you have earned the right to do so.

You have practiced economic imperialism to keep the flow of resources you need coming.

Your corporations make the law by buying politicians, and as a result, de-regulation is slowly killing your environment and dramatically affecting the environment of the rest of the world.

Your boast about low unemployment, but the reality is that the majority of those employed people have to work two or three jobs to make ends meet.

You have let insurance and pharma companies inflate drug prices to the point where no one but the rich can afford them.

You have taken from public education in a concerted effort to keep your people ignorant and barely capable of critical thinking.

You have pounded the mantra of white nationalistic patriotism into their heads to the point where all minorities are hated.

You have, through your deregulation of business, virtually ignored and created huge disbelief in the world wide need to address climate change.

You have neglected your country’s infrastructure to the point where it will soon be seriously affecting your productivity as a nation.

You have ignored the need for universal health care, believing it is a privilege and not a human right.

And you have run up the largest debt in the history of the world.

But most critically you have put an administration in power that is determined to isolate you from the rest of the world, at a time when universal cooperation between nations is a firm imperative.

The net result is that your country is the baby that is being thrown out with the bathwater, as one by one, nations around the world, nations that need to trust you, stop doing just that.

You operate under the outmoded idea that military might means true power, when, in fact, economic might has replaced that notion years ago. And your economic might in the world has been reduced by the isolation you practice.

What all this means is that unless you join the world again, and assume a responsible, humane, forward thinking leadership role, the likelihood of your eventual doom is very high.

But this is something you cannot achieve in your current state. You need to change gears, and shed the outmoded notion that living in the past is a sensible way to get to a prosperous future.

Having said all that, I am saying goodbye, because my country have been infected by the same malaise, and my contribution to helping that situation will have more effect than sending out messages that fall on mainly deaf ears.

I wish you all the best. I always have. But right now, you’re playing a short game in a long game world. You need to put on your specs and look around. If you do, you might see that you are looking at a lot of rough road ahead, on almost every level imaginable.

But until you heal your internal divisions and you become a country by the people and for the people again, any objective observer will tell you that this does not look good.

Adios amigos. I wish you all the best.

God, Jim, you fucking nailed it. Sad, but true. The empire is falling and Trump and his goons are an accelerant. If he is re-elected, we are sunk... God help us!

I'm afraid of that too. Philippe Collard. Which is why I;'m shifting my editorial focus to my own country.

Jim, As I said elsewhere on this platform today, there is a rise of Fascism around the world and until the people, the 99% rise up and reject the would-be dictators and their toadies, the downward spiral will continue. I fear it will be very bloody and hope that a rule of law emerges from the devastation. it will take people that stand in the face of the idiocy and say as a true patriot did, "Give me liberty or give me death." We must be willing to die for what is right. And so it goes.

As an immigrant and a US citizen, I feel your pain. Very acutely. America has gone to the dark side. That being said, it is not the 1st time. Let us hope it will come back to light. But I am very concerned that Canada, this gentle land, is now taking the same path. Or worst. When you see a Doug Ford elected PM in Ontario! Come on! And when you consider that Scheer could become Canada's PM's...anti abortion, does not believe in global warming, wants tax cuts for the rich, etc etc...does Canada really want they "lite" version of Trump??? If that's the case, I moving back to the US...

I haven't given up either. I hear what you are saying, but there is only so much depth that you can claw your way back from. I have always wanted the best for the US for both personal and Canadian reasons.

The reason it's hard to take is that a lot of it hasn't manifested itself in ways that really rip at the fabric of the nation. If the new budge goes through, people, especially older people will really start to feel it. I understand that this could all turn on a dime, but that turning has to start soon, because If the US isn't part of the world, then it's demise is pretty much assured. The world will, and already is, figuring out workarounds. "No man is an island".

I have not given up on America. As a 64 year-old Canadian who happens to be hooked on U.S. presidential history, America has been through many difficult periods. The age of Trump, hopefully only one term, is but a blip. The sun always rises. Coda: The demise of America will be soon followed by Canada's.

It's true. But their main problem is that they are being held back from adapting to the way the world is now. A USA that cooperates with the world sets a much better example, exploitation not withstanding.

I have an affinity for America because I grew up there. All I want is for that country to rejoin the world, because they are the odd country out right now. This has nothing to do with exploitation, with all due respect. A cooperate US impacts positively on the world. I don't care what their internal policies are...as long as they are a good neighhour, which is somethng they used to be but no longer are. Debasish Majumder

What I find truly concerning is not just the plight you so eloquently described, but the fact that many countries look up to this great nation and (probably without them being aware of it) mimicking all the negative aspects of it, along with some of the positive ones. However, as it's easier to copy a flaw than a virtue, they end up becoming conductors of all the perilous aspects you mentioned...

your passion for America and your ardent desire to retain the system of exploitation and its edifice is amazing Jim Murray! you still believe that America is the land of opportunity, despite it has become quite discern that they now decaying. i feel pity on your sincere approach to make America pristine like rump, who is fiddling that make America great!
