Pissing in your pants...

Pissing in your pants...

To be exact, what he used to say was, "Pissing in your own pants to give yourself a nice warm feeling"

beede897.jpgThe "he" I refer to was my first boss when I decided to get into the rough and tumble world of marketing — I learned many of my fundamentals from him and I am forever grateful. I hope he is well. The only reason I even thought of this is because I recently heard a saying cut from the same cloth, "Drinking from your own bath water".

And if I want to round off the triad with pithy sayings there is always, "Living in your own little bubble".

As trite (and slightly off-putting) as these sayings are, there is a crucial message that offers insight into the consequences of being internally focused, self centered, or operating in a world that is closed off (either by design or circumstances). This is one of those crucial messages to keep top of mind because in the end:

Your pants will get cold and uncomfortable very quickly

That dirty bathwater will make you sick

The bubble will burst (and that's usually complete destruction)

There is a story of a leader who was on top of the world, thought the situation was under control, and all his actions were "spot on"; that was until one day he was candidly briefed on the real situation, what was really going on, and how ineffective his activities really were.

To that he simply said, "Why didn't anyone say something?"

As an aside, this has reminded me of the book we are reading for our up coming book club entitled Radical Candorby Kim Scott (and that I should crack open the cover and start reading it) — I suspect it will offer further insights into this. In the mean time, I beleive it's always important to ask yourself two questions:

Am I doing this to make myself feel like I'm accomplishing something or will it tangibly make a difference?
Have I created an environment and a channel for communication to get information whether it is good, bad, or indifferent?

Not always easy but crucial for success, and besides, who wants to be stuck wearing a cold and wet pair of pants — it's uncomfortable, not to mention embarrassing.

Thanks for the comment Lisa Vanderburg... for me I'm starting to wonder "why" I'm here. Maybe I'm just getting philosophical in my old age. lol

One of my favourite idioms is "The Emperor Has No Clothes" https://www.michellegibbings.com/emperor-say-no-clothes/ Where I draw the line are those people who believe that doing nothing is the answer because you are OK to let someone fail a.k.a. the idiom here being "Give Them Enough Rope to hang themselves with" https://www.huffingtonpost.com/melissa-kaufman/give-em-enough-rope_b_6952248.html The key difference here is healthy skepticism rather than cowardly cynicism. Not to pour cold water on the cynic but it is where cynicism is actually a lack of courage that I find troubling.

Nobody likes hearing bad news but not hearing it could make things a whole lot worse.

And then, Graham, on the same subject of ineffective chane management, there’s the following: “you’re pissing in the wind” and “don’t throw shit in you own backyard”, neither of which you’ve done in this post. 🤗

I increasingly wonder if I'm really here - it's a recurrent theme with me :) But outside of the fluidity-nature (band on!), this has a good message Graham🐝 Edwards: what matters, and why? It's like teaching Grandma to suck eggs...I think!

Good point(s) Graham🐝 Edwards. I remember attending a seminar years ago on Digital Marketing. The digital marketing gurus on the panel, to a person, wanted to measure "ROI" in terms of "click-throughs" and were aghast at my questioning whether it would not be more meaningful to measure ROI in terms of conversions (sales). They all argued that conversions were not within their control, but that they could (for pay, of course) drive traffic to your website -- and that was measured by click-throughs and was the only meaningful metric for ROI in digital marketing. I replied that I could hire out to drive traffic into a mall-housed store, then stand out front and give a dollar to every person who agreed to walk into the store and charge two dollars to the merchant for each person who did. But that if nobody ever bought anything, the merchants ROI on his payments to me was still zero. Digital Marketing loves to piss in its own pants. Cheers!
