Retirement or work, which do you chose?

Retirement or work, which do you chose?

I thought I was one of the few who retired many times before taking full retirement. However I am, it appears soon to be in the majority. Some 40 percent of people 65 and older who are currently employed were retired at some point according to according to a 2017 Rand Corp. study authored by Nicole Maestas, an economist and associate professor of health-care policy at Harvard Medical School.

She used data from the Health and Retirement Study, funded by the National Institute on Aging, which has tracked thousands of people age 50 and older over the past two decades.

Almost 20 percent of those age 65 or older old full-time jobs, up from 12 percent in 2000. Falling fertility rates and tighter immigration rules are propelling more employers to retain and hire older workers to fill shortages. That’s providing seniors with extra income to use for travel and entertainment or for new technology and other products.

More than half of men and women age 50 and older who weren’t working or seeking jobs said they’d return to work if the right opportunity comes along, according to an analysis of the 2015 American Working Conditions Survey conducted by economists at the Rand Corp. The percentage is higher among college graduates, 60 percent of whom said they could be enticed out of retirement.

Even retirees in their 70s are finding jobs when they want to earn money and be active, so there is still hope for me if I want to unretire for a while.

; Helena I love your last line; No more office politics, enjoy your retirement and your new chairs as well as expanding your mind. As Franci and Harley said we need to stay engaged and relevant. It sounds like you will be doing this while having fun

I look forward to the pension cheques purely because that will allow me to do all the other work or stuff I have not had time for - my pearls and can't wait to unpack my stones I have collected the last 30+ years and yea, messing around with those old chairs I bought, the rolls of upholstery cloth in addition to attending more courses at West Sussex Uni - roll on June 2018 - no more office politics!

I agree that we should "work" but the definition of work for those of us who retired, I think has changed. We do what we can/want to be a contributing member of our society, as well as to be involved in activities that allow us our sense of creativity, challenge our intellect, keep us socially active and renew our spirit, and if we earn some money while doing this so much the better. Thank you all for your thoughtful comments.

Absolutely, Javier \ud83d\udc1d beBee. I plan to continue for a long time if I'm able to.
Royce Shook, I am not planning to ever retire! I am in my early 70s, but so what? What else would I do? I love my work, I love meeting new people, I love helping others by copyediting their articles and such -- and I love earning a little extra $$$ and working from home. I need to be useful and relevant. My idea of a horror story is just sitting around, wasting away, accomplishing nothing. I'll work at this job until I can't for health reasons or something, but even that isn't any kind of an issue right now. Be curious to see what others think about this!
Always work if possible
