Change Your Thinking
The Better

sultingLast week I posted an article here that basically announced a new partnership that my friend Charlene Norman and I have developed.
It included a little about how we got together and decided that there was a business there, how we had a lot of local resources to support us, yadda yadda.
I also posted our presentation in the form of sequential PNG files, so anybody who was interested in how something like this would work could get a deeper look.
The reason I chose to publish it here on beBee is because this is my blogging headquarters. It’s where I post everything I write outside of some anti-Trump rants which I save for all my friends on Facebook, because they love that shit.
The Intention

Jim Murray, Strategist, Writer
& beBee Brand Ambassador
I work with small to mid-sized businesses,
designers, art/creative directors & consultants

to create results driven, strategically focused
communication in all on & offline medio

| om also @ communications mentor, lyricist

& prolific op/ed blogger Your Story Well Told
mail.com | Skype:The primary intention of posting this article and all the information that about the partnership was so that Charlene and I could have a place to send people who simply don’t like opening attachments that you send them.
And believe me, there are a hell of a lot of those people. I am one of them for sure.
The secondary intention, which you could say is common to just about every post that anyone who knows anything about marketing does, was to let people know that this could possibly something their business or someone they know could use.
Having said that, the primary intention far outweighs the secondary intention because Charlene & I didn’t just fall off the turnip truck. We know that the way you get business is you do your homework, make contact with the person or organization you are interested in talking to and set a meeting.
There are very few savvy service suppliers who will tell you any different.
But, these days, if part of the marketing you do does not include making your presence felt on sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and beBee, then you are simply missing an important awareness and potential relationship-building piece of the puzzle.
Like & Trust

My friend Robert Wright, who is one of the smartest sales and business development people I know, lives by the mantra “People prefer to do business with people they like and trust.”
Part of that building process is the personal, partnership or company brand you create on social and business media sites.
This is all pretty basic new age Marketing 101. And so that’s what Charlene and I did. It’s certainly not all that we did. But communicating what you have to offer is the key to making people aware that, at the very least, you actually exist.
And the way you go about doing it is how you build positive relationships and the trust that is needed to bring those relationships to fruition.

Some People Have Issues With This

6df40b25.pngA couple of the comments on this post, which actually had more than 2200 views, 21 relevents and 33 comments, were critical of the whole idea of marketing your business on social media.
They cited the experience of getting lots of generic link requests on LI and then getting spammed all to hell with business solicitation inmail or email.
I was quick to explain that this posting was simply a place for Charlene and I to park our presentation until we decided that our business was an actual thing and worth investing in a web site, which is Common Sense 101.
I also pointed out that beBee’s management actively encouraged self-promotion, and this was backed up by a comment from @Javier Rica, one of beBee’s owners.
That didn’t really seem to cut any ice at all, which led me to believe that they had either had some sort of brain scarring experience over in the Lumpy Kingdom (as have many of us for different reasons) or that they misunderstood the nature of beBee itself…or both.
Regardless the comments, which bordered on toxic, ended up polluting my comment stream which I perceived to be a negative and not what I was actually hoping to attract.
There were a lot of supportive comments, but it’s the ‘one or two bad apples spoiling the whole bunch’ principle.
So I reposted this on my Wordpress site and Charlene and I will use this link to refer our prospects to instead.
Too Bad For beBee

Charlene and I will be going after a lot of larger companies in our region and I thought that promoting our partnership on beBee would get some larger businesses visiting and perhaps looking around to see what beBee was all about.

The Lesson Here

Social media is composed of two words.
The first word, Social, is the character word and indicates that you are or should be working to develop relationships with like-minded people or those who might need or know someone who might need your services
The second word is media, which is derived from the word medium which, in the marketing world means a place to market yourself or your clients.
To get your nose all out of joint because someone is marketing themselves on social media, which, in good part, is designed and intended to help people do just that, seems a little odd and old school to me. Does it to you?

Practice has shown that it is almost always better if we are fully transparent during self-expression. What's wrong with being vain? It is not far away from ignorance. Successful people are not always friendly, patient and calm, but great social people are. It is wise to publish only when you have to say something honest, thoughtful and helpful to others. Someone's audacity and the insatiable desire for power or the need to be always right about everything indicates the infinite loneliness. Sometimes it is wise to read, watch and learn. More than enough from me, or even from you. I could be right. It happens. Rarely.

Well said, Peter, as I expected it would be. You are welcome to criticize my work and lame-brained ideas anytime. For I genuinely believe that "Conversation Is Not Just Politely Waiting for Your Turn to Speak" https://www.bebee.com/producer/@friedman-phil/conversation-isn-t-just-politely-waiting-your-turn-to-speak As to self-promotion, all of social media is self-promotion. And I actually prefer such promotion in its overt (neat) form, rather than hypocritically disguised under labels like "sharing" and "giving" of content. Finally, re the "agenda" to which I referred, I am restrained by a prior commitment to not engaging certain persons on beBee. So suffice it to say, when some comments in the form of "it's a shame that all you schlumps choose to attack some of us really good and successful writers like Peter Altschuler AND ME (the comment author) because we don't like self-promotion -- such smells disingenuous to me. Especially when that same commenter rarely makes a comment without mentioning his own books and how successful they've been. (Never explaining why if so many millions of copies have been sold, he's not off in Pago Pago or somewhere equally exotic lining off the proceeds instead of putzing around on social media.) Well, I m'm good if you're good. Cheers!

Charlene and I would like to thank everybody for their comments pro and con. I don't like to think I am attacking anyone when I am defending myself against someone's opinion about what I do on any social media site, But the reality is I was quite clear in explaining my motivation and to reiterate what a few people have said, the beauty of having a scroll wheel on your mouse is that you can scroll on by that which doesn't interest you. I do it all the time, as we all do. The issue that was raised was, IMHO, a non issue, but by the fact that it was raised I felt compelled to defend my actions. I have nothing against Peter Altschuler. I barely know him. And I'm sorry that he found my post to be 'blatant' self-promotion and he's entitled to that opinion for sure. But once you start commenting along those lines, you need to be prepared for some blowback. Having said all that, I will continue to keep people informed of this new business venture regardless of how blatantly self promotional it may be perceived by some. Because, for the most part, my blogging activities here have been mostly about sharing insights, and this is no more than another opportunity to do just that.
Copying to Jerry Fletcher. Once again :-) To those who have a problem with Jim's post: 1. it was your choice to read it. 2. It is on beBee and there are a host of posts by Jim that would let you get to know him outside the business he is announcing. 3. This is the one social media site that is both business and personal so you can get to know the whole person. Reasons to be on beBee https://www.bebee.com/producer/@javierbebee/why-bebee-reasons-to-be-on-bebee Any reason is valid for anyone :-)

Yes, I know Phil. Thanks. According to urbandictionary.com, top definition for "fractalicious" is "Something that is infinitely tasty." I am not sure that fractals are always tasty, maybe only burgers, but they are self-similar and infinitely complex. Complexity can be exhausting, but it is the true nature of things. The fear of complexity - the complexity of fear. A must read for all that tend to be
Don’t be afraid, embrace complexity!" by Hamid Bouchikhi on knowledge.essec.edu http://knowledge.essec.edu/en/leadership/dont-be-afraid-embrace-complexity.html "It becomes clear that leading with complexity is not an intellectual option but a pragmatic and ethical imperative. It is an ethical imperative because decisions taken by leaders affect the lives of other human beings, even entire communities. Taking complexity into account is a pragmatic imperative since it improves the effectiveness of decisions. For these reason, I hope that complexity will find its place in the education of political and business leaders." by Hamid Bouchikhi from "Don’t be afraid, embrace complexity!" Neither am I, Milos. In a paraphrase of Groucho Marx, would not want to be connected with any "LI Influencer" who would consider being connected with me. BTW, can sayings be "fractalicious"?

Milos, you are correct. Peter Altschuler is among the better writers I've run across on social media -- better, in my view, than his almost-namesake James Altucher of LinkedIn "Influencer" notoriety, who has more than 3/4 million follower. And I for one welcome Peter's contributions here. However, Peter appears to be a big boy who can take care of himself verbally and is certainly not a shrinking violet when it comes to dishing out biting criticism. So, with all due respect, let's not cry tears for him -- especially not when those tears are actually camouflage for an entirely different agenda. IMO.

Rob Bacal, I agree with you Peter Altschuler is a very good writer and i read him with much pleasure. I am not connected with him here on beBee. And yes, I always learn a lot from those with whom I disagree, including you sometimes :) As I used to say, I think that criticism is useful for everyone, but social media criticism modeling, that will have fruitful effects (stretch and grow), is the special kind of art. I know nothing, as usual, but I am hard learner.

Milos Djukic

For example, I do not understand someone's tendency to piss someone off sometimes with written words. Nevertheless, this practice does not represent a reason for a decline of respect related to someone's activities in social media and particularly his writing. I highly appreciate someone's authenticity, even in the case when I completely disagree with his attitudes.

Milos Djukic

6 years ago #18

Jim Murray, Separate opinion on social media do not represent the humiliation of someone's ideas, since social media is a key outlet for people to vent personal opinions and also very often disagreements. Thus, the principle remain the same: unquestionably the good intentions, despite the critical observations, remarks and recommendations.

When you recognize in the other people's comments on social networks open disagreement that is not the reason for withdrawal from the game. Quite contrary, it is a sign of a healthy engagement.

Paul \ I fully agree. One of the many great things about beBee is that each of us is in control of their feed. We choose what we see. We choose who to see. We will also enjoy the "block" feature soon :) I am expecting to end this year reaching exponential growth. Buzz on ! 🐝🐝🐝🐝

The need to write in social media may be something quite abstract or very intimate, but also a source of money, success and fame. The essence is in balance. After all, everyone chooses their motives and intentions. For example, I can not reveal why one should accuse those who might write out of necessity for a little spiritual exhibitionism only. Different things represent pleasure for different people. I certainly think that any kind of generalization is not good, if not rather dangerous.Personally I have nothing against any kind of intellectual self-delusion or “intellectual smugness”, of course, only if the decent form was satisfied and if there were no insult or malicious accusations. If someone believes that he writes for himself or in promotional purposes it is legitimate right, even if he published on beBee or any other social media. Critical thinking is of great importance in the learning process. I am aware that it is quite difficult, if not impossible, to define relevant criteria for making the judgment well. Social media are more like living organisms, subject of the constant change and evolution. These changes are influenced by those who make up the social media and that is people.

All I can say is ... sheesh. What do people want on beBee? Blather, drivel and rot? The one thing I had on my Blogger.com site was the ability to remove inappropriate comments (mostly spam). It's too bad we can't clean up those types of comments here. Of course I'm not talking about the ones that may disagree, but I think you get my drift.

I agree entirely, Don 🐝 Kerr, and would like to mention that you and your wife Kate will appear on TV Ontario program - The Agenda with Steve Paikin on June 13 at 8:00 p.m. My understanding is that the program is also available to stream and that the link to the site is http://tvo.org/programs/the-agenda-with-steve-paikin Always room for a plug for a good cause, eh, Jim and Charlene? What this has shown me is that the rules of the Business Hub hive have to be modified, so that real-world business people like you and Charlene -- and Graham🐝 Edwards, and others can have a designated home for real-world business promotion on beBee. https://www.bebee.com/group/business-hub I am making the changes today and invite you, Charlene, and other bona fide business people to share their promotions there. Cheers!

Jim Murray's comments and express my regret that you have chosen this route. beBee is the poorer for this and if I had any influence on you at all would encourage you to stick to your guns and continue your important and meaningful presence on beBee as both a business person and a writer of great interest, value and insight.

Hey Phil Friedman. I just reposted it on my WordPress blog site. I have very few followers there and so it's not encumbered by bullshit or chips as you call them. But is it still here. I may remove it and repost it because I'd like to promote beBee as well. We will create a site for it, if we need to later. Thanks for the support, amigo.
There is room for everyone: no matter what you want: recruiting, telling stories, affinity networking, social selling, networking, personal branding, read & write, learn & teach, whatever...

Personally, I am sorry not that you, Charlene, and Bullet Proof have mounted your own web page, but that you succumbed to the truly idiotic criticism of the post in question. My response to those who complained about your post is to raise my right hand and invite them to guess which finger I'm holding up. You have for more than a year and a half and now Charlene share valuable and meaningful (and popular!) free content. And to my mind, if you want to put up a self-promotional marketing piece from time to time, that is only a reasonable quid pro quo for all your pro bono efforts. BeBee ownership has said there is room for everyone on beBee, and moreover bills the platform as a blend of personal and business-related activity, so there is no basis on which to complain about your piece. Anyone who doesn't like it can just keep scrolling. Cheers!
