The Couch Potato Chronicles: A Home Remedy for Chronic Trumpitis

The Couch Potato Chronicles: A Home Remedy for Chronic Trumpitis

STORIES & OPINION FROM THE QUIET SIDE OF THE LAKE

- oz NLLOver the last little while it has occurred to me that I had become obsessed with Donald Trump and massive amount of bullshit he has created in the US and around the world.

In the beginning I was determined to be part of the force for good that would put a stop to him. And so I started following him everywhere, almost stalking. Then, through long format post and several different types of memes I contributed to the very powerful “#resist’ movement.

But as the year went on, I started to see that we were no closer to putting Trump out of business, as so I started scaling back my activities, first cutting out long format posts then various memes.

I am now down to infrequent commenting.

However, I had a rhythm going for the year and I was suddenly confronted with a gap in my social media activities.

After some consideration I decided that a good thing for me to do would be to revive my original social media property, The Couch Potato Chronicles.

This was a column I started well in advance of social media, and kept going (in longer format posts) for about 10 years. These posts ranged in length from 1500 to about 3000 words, depending on how much time I had to write and were published once a week.

So the challenge for me here was to be able to create valid mini-reviews in a much more restrictive format.

What you see below are the first 3 pieces of my revived CPC. These will be posted on beBee, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. If you like them, please feel free to follow me there and share them with your buds. I will be producing anywhere from 2 to 4 per week. I may very well sneak in something political, but I assure you that this is not, and never will be, the major focus.

Cheers, Jim

WN,

Hold On To The Rock, Dammit!

The Toronto Raptors (NBA Basketball) had their best regular
season ever so far as a franchise. First in the east. Record number
of wins. Record number of road wins. Etc.

But the playoffs, as they say, are a whole other season. And
even though they are playing a #8 seed in the Washington
Wizards, this is, as they found out last night, not going to be a
walk in the park.

Washington is a well-balanced, well-coached team with only
one real weakness which is their post defense. The Raptors are
the better team on paper, but last night they revealed a weakness
that they have been doing a pretty good job of hiding up to now.
And that is holding onto the ball.

They gave up a ton of points off turnovers which is, as any
basketball fan will tell you, the quick deadly killer.

But worse than that, this lazy ball control led to lethargy in
other areas of their game, so their offense was nowhere near as
assertive. The result: they lost the game and let
the Wizards back into the series.

For a Raptor fan, this sucks. But for a fan of yO HRoy,
the game, this series just got really interesting. <

SPOTLIGHT

BREAK THE STORY. BREAK THE SILENCE

Spotlight Lives Up To All Its Hype
Saturday nights are movie nights around here when there's
something worth watching. And since | like to get my ten bucks a
month worth out of Netflix, tonight we watched Spotlight.

This is an absolutely outstanding journalism tale, based on the
true story of how, in 2001, the Spotlight team of the Boston Globe
newspaper, slowly, methodically and very thoroughly broke and
rode with the story of the Roman Catholic church's world wide
cover-up of pedophilia, perpetrated mostly by priests.

The irony of this story taking place in Boston, where more than
50% of the people are Roman Catholic was not lost on us. | can
only image how difficult it must have been for the editors and
writers as they diligently peeled back layer upon layer of this
very well constructed whitewash.

Spotlight won the Academy Award for best screenplay and best
picture in 2017, and deservedly so. Everybody and their uncle is
in this movie, including Michael Keaton, Liev Schreiber & Rachel
McAdams, and they are all amazing.

IMHO this is the best journalism film since
All The President's Men. And that's sayin’ O° CHRoy,
something for sure. Available on Netflix.

Suits...Legal Drama, Comedy, Soap Opera or All 3?
We've been watching Suits religiously for the past 4 seasons, and
have no clue as to why we are doing this.

Every so often it occurs to me that | could be doing something
more productive, like reading Facebook ads or washing my hair,
and other times, | just say what the hell and get lost in the
manic behaviour of, well just about everyone on the show.

One thing | don't like about Suits is how quickly the plots turn
on even the briefest of adverserial conversations or the quickest
glance at some document in some folder, inevitably triggering the
totally predictable, “What do you want?" response.

Another thing I'm niot crazy about is that every character
explains their feelings is concise detail in almost every scene. It's
definitely a style of writing that very much appears to be tailored
to the hard of thinking.

But what | do like about Suits is the energy. Most of the
characters feel like they are permanently jacked up on caffeine.
And so the hour (down to about 47 minutes) just kinda zips by.

Right now we are waiting for the big season finale
where the Meghan Markle character gets written
out, on account of her new royal obligations. 0 CHRoy,
Bye bye Meghan. Wednesdays on Bravo

Jim, Love the couch potato format. Short, sweet and to the point. If you must write about Trump this will be good way to do it. I've come to the conclusion the less said about "Agent Orange" the better.

Jim Taggart. Yeah we still flip over to the CNN shitshow. But somehow it's just become so ludicrous as to be depressing. But I know what you mean about how hard it is to avoid it all.

Paul Walters. Phil and I have started a new He Said He Said post about what's going on in social media, so IO have explained a bit more about my self-initiated cease and desist order against Trump posts. I was never any sort of journalist like yourself so I am happy as can be just writing these little snippets. After 1000 or more long format posts, I can recycle a lot of them, and save the grunt work for my Bullet Proof web site.

I've tried to control reading and watching all the garbage on Trump, but even in the Great White North it's tough. It's like impulse buying in a store, with treats at the cash register. BTW -- had to laugh today when it was exposed by BusinessWeek, I believe, that Trump lied to Fortune Magazine years ago about his wealth, grossly inflating it, and in turn securing numerous investors for his properties. Nothing changes.

Jim Murray . Ah Trumpism I too have been obsessed but perhaps I should take a leaf out of the Balinese playbook. 1) They only live for the 'now' moment...i.e. no tomorrow, now yesterday only NOW! 2) Methinks the majority have no idea who Trump is and if they do they dont care! ( even though the Trump Organisation has done deals here with the most corrupt of politicians. 3) I fear that when Satan ( Trump) has his summit with little rocket man and they 'denuke' he will be claimed a hero and all of his current woes will be swept under the carpet! C'mon Stormy...surely you have more dirt!

Yeah, I can see that. I'm now fearful that the Raptors will actually blow this series. Hopefull home court works in their favour. Bill King
