The First Symptoms Of The Death Of Democracy

For the past several years I have been watching as democracy, as we used to know it back in the day, is slowly eroding into a strange form of lawlessness.

And a lot of this erosion has precisely to do with the medium on which you are reading this.

The Internet has made all kinds of good things happen. It’s sped the process of innovation. It’s allowed us to communicate freely with people from all over the world. And it’s given us the ability to access pretty much all of human knowledge.

But for all the upsides of the Internet, there are downsides to be considered.

One of the key downsides is that the idea of objective truth, which people had always had to work hard to find, is eroding.

The sheer volume and easy accessibility of information that supports people’s personal points of view has been drawing people away from the search for objective truth and towards information and propaganda that supports whatever it is they happen to believe.

I am convinced that this is one of the key factors in the development of an ever widening chasm between Liberal and Conservative thinking.

With the freedom to choose, coupled a fundamental lack of curiosity or interest in really understanding important issues, people simply get on Google and find all kinds of stuff that supports what they believe.

This, I would assume, is what passes for the accumulation of knowledge in most people’s minds.

I prefer to call it what it really is which is a form of self-administered brainwashing.

Sexual Harassment Lynch Mobs

Where we are seeing this most clearly these days is in the huge eruption of sexual misconduct allegations being leveled at powerful people in all walks of life.

And while I think that outing these men is long overdue in the North American culture, I really do have to wonder about what happened to the concepts of Innocent Until Proven Guilty, Due Process Of Law and the right to confront your accusers.

What has been happening is that (almost) anyone who is accused of sexual assault or sexual harassment of any kind is now being summarily fired and or forced to resign their positions.

This not only adds to the perception of their guilt, but it also, guilty or innocent, scars these people for life, by branding them as sexual predators without the benefit of any judicial process. It is a huge black mark on their reputations, regardless of the objective reality of the situation.

This is a very slippery slope, and one of the key indicators of an illness that has taken over as a result of the news media  and the Internet and the people who are influenced by them, to somehow become judge, jury and executioner.

It really does beg the question of how far this can go. And my fear, at least at this point in time, is that this is merely the tip of the iceberg.

I Am 100% Pro-Woman

Now I want to clarify my position here. I am one of those people who believe that women should be running the world, because all men have so far succeeded in doing, for the most part, is running it into the ground.

I also believe that a lot, and by a lot I mean a hell of a lot, of men have problems with women. They consider them somehow inferior to them, hence expressions like the softer sex and the weaker sex.

This, of course, is primitive thinking , and far removed from reality, as women are proving every day now.

But I also believe that anyone who is accused of a crime should not be found guilty or innocent without due process.

But, in the case of all these sexual misconduct scandals, this process is being short circuited by a combination external influences and people forming and voicing opinions without the benefit of this due process, which is one of the basic rights offered in any democratic society.

Sadly, what is happening now is a form of passive-aggressive anarchy that is doing irreparable harm to the system of laws on which our society is based and the people who stand accused and are now simply tried and convicted in a very one-sided kangaroo court.

It’s quite likely that most of these men are guilty, but would it not be better for the collective conscience of society to at least prove it beyond a reasonable doubt, before setting fire to their lives and reputations?

Just sayin’.
