The Highlights Of My Trump Free Weekend

The Highlights Of My Trump Free Weekend

6beae2e1.pngAs part of my ongoing effort to lessen the frequency of my anti-Trump posts I declared for myself a Trump-Free weekend.

This was a kind of voyage in the Way-Back machine to a time before Trump was everywhere all the time.

Before the time when he monopolized the desperate and gullible news media. Before the time when he dominated Twitter with his insipid and virtually endless tweeting, some of which, (the most coherent) was done by his grubby little minion Stephen Miller. Before all the stirring up of racial hatred and class warfare and all that other shit. Before stoking the fires of isolationism and really perfecting the art of fake news. And before it was obvious that he was simply a Manchurian Candidate doing the bidding of his Russian overlord. Before all the shit we have come to know and hate about him.

FRIDAY (Because I declared a long weekend)

Edited and reposted a piece on how great it was to be a Canadian, just to get me in the mood. https://www.bebee.com/producer/@jim-murray/canadians-what-a-lucky-bunch-of-sobs-we-are

In the PM, drove with my wife (Heather) to Burlington by way of Beamsville to Ikea where we bought a craft chair and an Ivar shelf for her printers. On the way back home, again, via Beamsville, (don’t ask), picked up some stain at the big old Kala’s Home Hardware, where you can get anything, on Fourth Avenue.

Picked up a sub for Heather. I had some soup and watched the Raptors game, which was one of the best games I’ve seen this season, against the Spurs.

Went downstairs and watched a few things with Heather, including a little Canadian news, where these obsessive talking heads are all over the SNC Lavalin scandal. Lots of could be’s and maybes, just like the fuckers at CNN.

SATURDAY

Wrote a post on the nervous condition I have. I do this from time to time to remind myself that I need to keep exercising and lay off the stimulants to keep my balance. https://www.bebee.com/producer/@jim-murray/apologies-to-johnny-depp-it-wasn-t-you-man-it-was-me

The Weather Network predicted a substantial wind storm was coming our way for Sunday. But it was pretty warm so I took a bike ride down to the highway, to stock up on supplies.

Heather went back to Beamsville for a quilting thing. (I can’t keep up with all the stuff she does). So I tooled around and picked up a bunch of stuff to see me through the rest of the weekend with no car.

Watched a little bit of CNN. They were going deep on this poor fucked up Jussie kid who faked a racist attack on himself in Chicago. Lots of righteous indignation from everybody about how far he’s set the black lives matter movement back. Yeah, OK. Jesus. The US is not the most racist country in the world, but it’s right up there. I’m not even sure why this is national news except I imagine that the Trumpees lobe it and the andt-Trumpees use it as another prod.

At the same time, police found some white guy with a huge stash of weapons who, by his own admission was planning to kill Democratic politicians and blacks in the name of MAGA. See, there’s no fucking escaping this shit.

Steamed the floors (we have a lot of tiles floors), which is actually almost as gratifying and satisfying as any activity you can name.

After Heather got home we had some of her incredible Shepherd’s pie for dinner and some apple cobbler, that my son Dan made, for dessert, then went down and watched a double episode of Chicago Fire and Chicago PD. This is some of the best network TV going. Dick Wolfe is a genius.

After that I went upstairs and watched the Houston Rockets, without James Hardin, beat the NBA champion Golden State Warriors in their own house. This is about as hard a hard a thing to do as possible in the NBA, and the Rockets did it without their 30 point guy. Awesome.

SUNDAY

Heather left for an overnighter in Toronto to bring the taxes to our accountant and visit with the kids, so I took the ikea shelf to the basement and stained the whole thing.

I could not do this while she was here, because she’s asthmatic and the stain smell is something she’s violently allergic to.

The wind picked up around noon and so I went up to the lake to take some pics. It’s was really brutal there because it was wide open and you could really feel the full effect of the weather. There were whitecaps on the water a mile out.

When I got home I posted a couple of the pics I took and wrote a little post about winter in Fort Erie when I was younger. https://www.bebee.com/producer/@jim-murray/the-last-two-humans-on-the-planet

The house was still kinda smelly so I and rubbed down the shelves and took them out to the shed were they could cure some more, before I put it all together later in the week.

In the afternoon, I watched a little golf and then the Raptors game against the Orlando Magic. You could tell they were pooped out from beating San Antonio, as anybody would be because San Antonio is the best coached team in the NBA (IMHO). So they lost that one.

I had some soup for dinner, and for a while I just sat and listened to the wind howl. My sister sent me a link to a video of the ice in the Niagara River actually blowing up over the breakwall in Fort Erie and piling up like it had been plowed there. It was fucking scary.

I watched a bit of a DC Superhero movie with Will Smith, who was really cut, and put together the craft chair we bought for Heather at Ikea.

Watched a couple of other shows and avoided CNN, pretty much the whole weekend. I can’t believe how little I missed it.

So that was the highlights reel of Trump Free weekend. I recommend it highly. In fact I am working my way up to a Trump-Free week. Not sure that’s humanly possible without unplugging everything I own. But I may just give it a try in the summer, when I can swim and ride a lot more.

Have a great week, everybody

Jim, You have found the secret. Just don't turn that shit on! If it says anything in my internet feed that has the name Trump in it I do something else. If I must have a news injection I listen to NPRs international coverage. Avoidance can be inspiring. And so it goes.
