The house across the street.

The house across the street.

The house across the street.

As I was getting ready for work today they tore down the house across the street.

We knew it was coming coming, but it was still a shock to see the house come down in such a dramatic, sudden, and casual way.  What was once a home, is now a pile of junk to be discarded.

Every time I see this, I cannot help but think of all the dreams, aspirations, blood, sweat and tears that went into building the house in front of me.  It was now being torn down to be replaced by someone else's dreams. The stories that happened in that place have there now gone.

So, the house across the street is my muse today, and has me ask two questions of myself.

I can pour our dreams, aspirations, blood, sweat and tears into my life and have a huge impact while I'm here, but what happens when I leave?  Am I leaving a legacy that will continue?

The second question, and the more important one, is what is the legacy I'm leaving?  Is it worthy of a life lived?

If we did not think in terms of legacy then all our dreams, aspirations, blood, sweat and tears will be like the house across the street.

Postscript:  This is a rare example of the fact that I can indeed be serious.

Occasionally I get seriously introspective, but not for too long because of my short attention span. We just moved into this neighbourhood. I spent more than a few hours painting, reorganizing, cleaning, weeding, etc. to turn a pile of bricks, mortar and grass into our 'home'. I couldn't help but reflect that some poor sod across the street did the same thing. The point of the exercise is to value our relationships, do things that really matter, and create great stories.

The house is gone but the story lives on. #2

Perhaps under this gruff exterior is a helpless romantic (or an anthropologist). I am such a fan of stories... those that we create, those we live, and those we remember. The brick and mortar are the container of these stories, and things are just things without a story to go with them. The house across the street was originally built for someone to live out their story.

Why so sad, Kevin Pashuk ? Real dreams and aspirations are those that last beyond mere bricks and mortar. Yes a house may form the framework to a home, but it's the people who temporarily inhabit its space who leave a legacy, and the legacy is formed by deeds not materials. The ruins of today are the new foundations of tomorrow. Remember the Phoenix, Kevin. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦
