The Leadership Hive

The Leadership Hive

Last night we held our club elections to elect the new executive for 2016-17.  The term of this executive begins from July 1st, until then I continue to serve on the out-going executive.

In my candidate speech I explained to the club members that their vote should not go to the most experienced candidate but to the club member who they think will most benefit from the educational experience of serving as a club leader.  This led to a vote in the tie which under Toastmasters guidelines results in selection of the tied candidate via a coin toss. As the Election Officer gave the coin to an independent party, the coin was tossed so high, it hit the ceiling but was called fair.   Like most things in my life that look like they were decided by a coin toss, I was elected, and with three contestants, it is likely that I won due to a split vote.

The rest of the election for the other offices went smoothly and no coin toss was required, by the end of the meeting, a new slate had been elected and I look forward to serving but more importantly actively learning with this team.

The Hexagons in the Leadership Hive do not solely represent a "hive", they also represent team chemistry.  The hive that I am exploring as a part of my individual learning journey is not separate from the team chemistry - and that chemistry is where this hive sits within and also serves - and that is what Ralph Smedley the founder of Toastmasers called a Learning Laboratory.  It is in this learning lab that I will configure my learning from the hives I am a part of.  Regularly, clubs within Toastmasters have a hierarchical relationship and do not view leadership as a hive.  I do not need them to view it as a hive, because viewing it as a hive is a fundamental part of my own learning goal.  This conforms with the greater principle that Toastmasters is the club Ralph Smedley said he knew that was created to serve the individual.

The learning lab contains both elements of competent communication and competent leadership and thus I do not separate the word LEARNING from the word LEADERSHIP.   Within the college toastmasters environment all leadership is a part of the learning we choose.  No individual member is obligated to be taught, for they are all responsible for the extent of their learning, since the program is self-paced learning.  If a member wishes to pursue the program and not learn anything, that is their individual learning choice.  This way no member is treated like a school-child but the adults they are and meant to be.   As a part of my individual learning I will explore my leadership experience with the club as a hive.  I am glad that sufficient members had cast their vote so I can now operate from the hive of education - the very hive that is most pertinent to my learning journey.  It is not essential that I won, but it is essential that I learn.

- Addendum - In reference to thought #1 I have written a thought piece called "The Ecosystem" because the Leadership Hive is not straight forward extrapolation of a bee-hive. https://www.bebee.com/producer/@cityvp-manjit/the-ecosystem The biggest difference of all being that in a bee-hive there is no central authority in the way bee's create the hive, but in the leadership hive we can use our knowledge of the bee ecosystem to inform the yin-yang relationship between central authority and no authority. There is great value in studying the hive but that does not mean we become the hive - that is the problem that ends up being called THE BORG type behaviour http://www.startrek.com/article/is-the-borg-the-ultimate-social-network

In reference to thought #1 I will be writing a thought piece called "The Ecosystem" because the Leadership Hive is not straight forward extrapolation of a bee-hive, the biggest difference of all being that in a bee-hive there is no central authority in the way bee's create the hive, but in the leadership hive we can use our knowledge of the bee ecosystem to inform the yin-yang relationship between central authority and no authority. The other difference is that while we at our club are highly honoured to have a woman as our President-elect, we need to view her as a human being and not a queen bee and under no account are we going to fly out of the hive in order to try to mate with her, that would be a severe contravention and highly unconscionable subversion of human ethics. So I celebrate her as a person/human being and not as a "female CEO" who like us is learning leadership. There is great value in studying the hive but that does not mean we become the hive - that is the problem that ends up being called THE BORG type behaviour http://www.startrek.com/article/is-the-borg-the-ultimate-social-network

thought is really appreciated. It is about time you were here Ruben! Not only are you our club founder but you may be the only Spanish speaking member of any of the Sheridan clubs. At beBee the founders are from the great city of Barcelona, and like them you also possess the conquistador spirit. Ruben you are not just one of the founders of our club, it is your founder value that will remain as the club evolves, just as the founder value of Javier C\u00e1mara Rica will always be rooted in beBee, even in the years ahead where it employs an army of people around the world. HP lost its founder values and boom has become a mere marketing company, Apple re-found its founder values and since married technology with art to elevate and transform entrepreneurial spirit. Of course it takes a village to a metaphorical child, but it also takes a conquistador spirit and both you and I have that in abundance, (even if I don't speak Spanish) and we will conquer new territory, a territory of the mind.
