The NBA Playoffs…So Far, Pretty Amazing

WE THE NORTH

IS OUR BATTLE CRY ... AND THIS ... THIS IS OUR SHIELD

There’s a popular belief that the NBA post season is a season unto itself and that’s probably never been as true as it is these days.

While there are still a few genuinely elite teams in the league (Warriors and Rockets in the west, Bucks and Raptors in the east), playoff games are always intriguing, hard fought and exciting as hell.

Yesterday and this evening I watched two series closeout games.

One between the Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic and the other, tonight, between the Houston Rockets and the Utah Jazz.

Despite the fact that both the Raptors and the Rockets were up 3 games to 1 in their respective series, there was absolutely no quit in either the Magic or the Jazz. These were real battles fought pretty much right up to the end and easily could have gone the other way.

And this, ladies and germs, is why I love playoff basketball. There really is a much more dialled up intensity in these post season games, and the farther you go towards the championship, the more intense everything gets.

Although I am a Raptors fan, in the post season, I don’t really care who is playing because there is so much parity in the NBA right now that the old NFL “Any Given Sunday” cliche applies in spades here.

For those of you who are not sport fans, the ‘Any Given Sunday’ expression came from back in the day when there was a lot of parity in the NFL. It basically meant that on any Sunday, which was when all the NFL games where played, any team could beat any other team.

That’s not the case so much anymore in the NFL, but it definitely is the case in the NBA, and the games I saw in this years first round of the playoffs proved it in spades.

There are still a couple of series going on in the west and I won’t get to see those games but what I have seen has been pretty amazing so far.

I know a lot of the people I’m connected with on social media aren’t all that into basketball. But there are a few out there who love it as much as I do, and know, in no uncertain terms, just what level of hog heaven we are all in all through the post season.
