The St Catharines Journal- New Years Day Edition
I have been keeping a daily (more or less) journal of the my experiences here in St Catharines Ontario and posting them on Facebook (friend me at JJ Murray). We officially moved in on December 19th and spent most of our time, except for partying with family, unpacking and organizing. And because the weather has not been severe, I have been our riding and getting a feel for the city. Not ranging as far as I normally would in the warmer seasons, but getting a pretty good feel for the north side where we live.
This is my new Year's Day Entry, which is a good place to start. I will publish this every time I have three entries.
St Catharines Journal - New Year's Day Edition
My friend and fellow Beezer Kevin Pashuk calls this area the quiet side of the lake. But I’m not so sure about that. On Boxing Day we took a ride around Niagara Falls, and today we drove over to Niagara On the Lake and both places were peopley as all hell. They were wandering everywhere like zombies in The Walking Dead.
It seemed really strange to see so many people out and about at this time of year, but I’m learning that I should not be surprised at anything that happens around the shore of Lake Ontario.
I figure in a few years the Go Train will be stopping here and in the Falls as well and what that’s going to do to the population, the traffic and the general level of chaos (which is relatively low) around here is anybody’s guess.
We are far from the only Torontonians who have migrated here over the past while. They’re all over the place, cashing in on the Toronto real estate bubble and picking up the little mansion of their dreams for about half the price.
After our drive, I decided to map out a route and ride down to Sunset Beach, which is really just a couple of miles from here. It’s aptly named because when I got there at around 4:00 pm the sun was low in the sky and, well, starting to set. I will probably be confused about east and west for a while now. But I’m definitely starting to get comfortable with north and south.
The neighbourhood around Sunset Beach has a kind of ‘beach’ community feel about it. In fact, it appears to be called The Valley for some reason. That’s cool, although I didn’t notice myself descending in any way on the way over there.
What it is is the bottom left hand corner of the city, because on the other side of the beach is the canal and on the other side of the canal is thousands of acres of vines and trees and some of the best grape growing soil in Canada.
It’s gonna be awesome to behold in the summer.
