The Trump Chronicles: Forty Miles Of Bad Road

The Trump Chronicles: Forty Miles Of Bad Road

MAKE AMERICAThe election of Donald Trump is really not something that surprised me in the least. Mainly because it was a kind of protest vote against the corruption that has become so much a part of the US political system.
Trump, who is very bright about a couple of things and very not-so-bright about almost everything else, saw this, or was advised to see this as a strategy.
And being the con artist/ruthless businessperson that he is, went after it with all the energy he could muster.
Everything he said and everything he did was designed to execute that strategy and make a lot of disgruntled and disillusioned people feel that their anger and disillusion was well-founded.
He gave them permission to place blame…on Washington and , in turn on Mexican (who were stealing their jobs and generally all bad hombres), on blacks (who were getting way to uppity with their Black Lives Matter bullshit), on Muslims who were basically all breeding terrorists and infiltrating the country at an alarming rate, and on the the previous Liberal administration, whose environmental protection stance and worthless trade deals were stifling big business and preventing America’s economy from growing and making the country great again.
The fact that none of this had any basis in reality did not matter. He plowed ahead, spewing lies and fuelling the quiet rage that had been burning for years inside a lot of people.

He lied and lied and lied some more, He got so good at it that he could even lie about how the media was making up fake news to poison him, and turn the public against him, when in fact all they were really doing was questioning the fake news that he was generating.
After he got elected, he began to systematically break or ignore every campaign promise he had made. Because he had no intention of ever keeping them in the first place.
But he didn’t give a shit. He had played it just right. He had a congress that was a Republican majority who were terrified of opposing him. He hired an alt right policy advisor and psychopath to guide him and began issuing executive orders to create policies that didn’t actually benefit anyone except the military industrial complex, Wall Street, big oil and big coal.
And he threw the country into chaos from an immigration perspective.
But because he was now so far removed from his element, and because he was too egocentric to actually listen to his policy advisers (except psycho Steve), he started running into challenges in the courts. The result, more chaos.
Finally, the Democrats who spent a lot more time than they should have licking their wounds finally started figuring out how to make life miserable for Trump.

The most ingenious thing they have come up with so far is the Russian influence on the election. They like this one because if they pull it off they could actually get Trump impeached or even (worse/better) thrown into prison for treason.
Better late than never, they now appear to have Trump on the ropes a bit, scrambling to create more fake news to counter all the Russian election interference tactics. The latest fake news distraction tactic is that Obama had the phones in Trump Tower bugged during the election campaign.
This was a hoot because, of course, anybody with two brain cells to rub together knows that the courts and not the president authorize phone tapping. And they only do so if there is evidence that a serious crime is being committed.
This is the problem with being out of your depth and being too ego-centred to actually think things through.

Everything that is currently happening in America is something that is the result of a long and systematic dumbing down of the population. My belief is that this dumbing down was done to ensure that there was a huge work force of poorly educated people who knew just enough to be thankful for whatever crap job they were able to get.
But when automation started to really take hold, these same people found themselves displaced and marginalized and mostly working for coolie wages in retail.
These are the people that Trump seized on as his core. The rest of the people who added volume to his movement were just regular Republicans who basically were mesmerized by the endless stream of lies coming at them and started to believe them.
This entire chapter of US political history is really nothing more than a huge helping of theatre of the absurd.
People who see it for what it is (intelligent Democrats and independents and people from other countries) find it astonishing that a country that could produce so much of the world’s true innovation, could also be the home to so much ignorance and gullibility. It’s a paradox of epic proportion.
Last night I had dinner with an American guy I know and when we started talking about it, he told me that none of this was all that unusual. That America swings to the left then to the right and that is the pattern. None of this seemed to upset him all that much, except for the fact that maybe things were a bit crazier than usual.
A bit crazier than usual. OK. I can live with that. Can you?

#27 I'm actually a conservative. but @Warren , let's not confuse conservatives with Trump. I'm pretty sure that most of the intelligent people who voted for him had no idea what a bag of snakes this was going to turn out to be. The Democrats are in pretty much the same state of disarray as the Republicans. I personally believe that the US needs to concentrate more on how to move in the world economy. Trump's policies are not Republican. They are insane and will only work to the detriment of the country, alienating and isolating it from the rest of the world. This will really end up hurting badly.

I like what you've said, @Jim Murray. I think the main point is Trump created chaos much the way smoke is used on bees. It's supposed to calm them down the, in fact, it just disorients them. It seems a disoriented public can be manipulated—but often it's manipulated by both sides (as we've seen). It allows for rhetoric which seems to be America's greatest enemy right now.

Nicole Chardenet, over the years, I've come to the conclusion that people do not vote in accord with the interests of the socio-economic class to which they belong, but in accord with the perceived interests of the socio-economic class to which they would, in their fantasies, LIKE to belong. Thus, we have people who are suffering and dying because they cannot afford basic medical and dental care voting AGAINST universal healthcare because to support it would "place an unfair tax burden on the wealthiest 2% of the population. I call this observation "Friedman's Theory of Self-Delusional Class Identification".

An interesting and thought provoking article. The debate as to how trump got elected will be mulled over for ages. From his side of rhe atlantic it seemed he would come out with something which would torpedo any noemal politician's career and yet it bounced off him like he didn't care - and that perhaps was part of his attraction. For far too long politicians have been saying contradictory things all depending on the audience they were speaking to. Trump may have been boorish, sexist, objectionable and maladjusted - but he was consistent. He is breaking all the old assumptions up and he is unpredictable in his actions. I expect the 25th amendment will be enacted at some point to try an bring some form of status quo back. . I don't believe he is a Soviet puppet - his strings keep getting far too tangled.

That's correct. But in this case it's very toxic.

Thanks Robert Cormack. That's arguable. I would have much preferred to see a President Sanders and a democratic. congress. The good thing is that there's not where to go but up from here, because they are waaaaay down there in the pit.

Can't disagree. Trump didn't so much win it as the Dems lost it by not letting Bernie Sanders go up against Trump. A lot of Hillary's supporters would have supported Sanders, but the reverse was not true and it was all exacerbated by the Dems choosing to go forward with Hillary which was all same old same old. It was a huge tactical error. Erroll -EL- Warner

Thanks Geoffrey Cooling. Yeah. I'm sitting here in Canada and watching this spill over into anti-muslim and and anti-semitic bullshit. It's really hard to not be cynical about how racist and ignorant some people are and how Trump's behavior has given them permission to act out. This is incredibly destructive stuff.

An economist and a small business owner fell into a deep well together. After surveying the situation, the small business owner asked the economist what he thought they should do.. He pondered the question for a moment and answered, To answer the question we first must assume we have a ladder.

We've all seen the chaos, bloodlust and savagery, @Jim Murray. Before this is over, I suspect we'll see much more. At least America will see how far down the path they've been led, and hopefully politicians in Washington will realize Americans will only sit still for so long. Maybe Trump is a good thing in that respect. If you don't know the cancer is there, you won't do anything about it. Thanks for the post.
