Try As I Might The Christmas Spirit Eludes Me This Year
Besides the kitchen and bedroom, there are only two places in this house where I can sit comfortably. One is right here in a space I have carved out on the dining room table, which is otherwise filled with all the odd shaped bits and pieces of flotsam and jetsam of our life and delicate miniatures which I am terrified to try and pack.
Right now due to the weird foibles of the real estate business I now, or should I say, my friendly neighbourhood Royal Bank, owns two houses.
I live in this one and pack and work and watch football at night, cause I'm too whipped to do anything else
My wife lives in the house in St Catharines and unpacks the loads we have transported and takes care of all the business bullshit you have to go through when you change residences.
Christmas Is The Casualty This Year
If you could see the house we bought you would understand why we had to close on it in early December. So then we were at the mercy of the buyer for our house. He offered us an amazing amount, which we weren’t about to turn down for expediency’s sake.
So here we are feeling like well to do people in an amicable divorce.
Our skinny little Christmas tree was packed into the car last weekend with all the plants. But I packed the wrong lights. So there it sits in the window of our new family room, waiting to light up the lives of passers by, (of which there are few), pretty much defining our Christmas so far.
We knew we were writing off this Christmas or a good deal of it . But that doesn’t make it any less sad. My life is consumed with mundane things that tire me out and writing work that needs to be done before Christmas so other people can enjoy theirs.
My Big Attempt at Kickstarting My Christmas Spirit
Last week when we were both here, (where the Fibe TV is), we watched the wonderful Johnny Reid Special, “A Christmas Gift To You.”
Johnny is a transplanted Scotsman with a unique voice and is one of the best songwriters I have encountered in a while.
But he is also a Catholic and the songs he picked to sing, with the exception of a couple of his own, were the Christmas carols that a lot of us grew up with.
These songs, many of which celebrate the birth of Christ and the beginning of Christianity as we know it, are so ingrained in my psyche from hearing them every year sung by Kate Smith, Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Andy Williams, The Three Tenors, Barbra Streisand and many others, that they always trigger a wave of teary eyed nostalgia from my earliest days here on planet earth.
Usually this is enough Christmas spirit juice to get me through the entire season. But this year it was just a temporary respite.
It Will Happen Soon
This is also the first year in my married life that I can recall our house not being the family gathering place for Christmas.
We will be moved in on the 19th, but the chaos will probably continue unabated for a while. Fortunately we have a lot more space in this house and can keep the entire first floor where we will be doing most of our living, relatively chaos free.
Maybe once that is all in place, the old Christmas flame will ignite in my brain and we can salvage at least a semblance of our usual Christmas deal.
I also find that writing posts about Christmas, which this is, in a left handed sort of way, also helps.
Christmas is my favourite time of year. It was a time of great joy when our kids were little shrimps and it is that again with two new little grandshrimps.
We will have a good time. My wife will make sure of that and, as usual, I will tag along for the ride.

Holiday Inn - yes, that's it. A holiday inn. But what an inn . . .

Wayne, I've never seen Holiday Inn before. I googled the movie and it has Bing Crosby & Fred Astair in it? Looks like a classic. Love The Grinch too. I bet it does take some time for the Holidays to feel the same. Maybe they will never feel the same again but a 'different' type of good?! We are already focusing on building new traditions with my daughter and her family, I think it helps to know even when things change, we can make new memories together. Wishing you a peaceful Holiday season!

Lisa - Yes! It's a Wonderful Life is a tradition over here. And "Holiday Inn." And the Dr. Seuss "Grinch Christmas" thing. Changing traditions happens. When my mother passed away a few years ago, we had to find another "hub" for family gatherings. Our eldest sister took over the tradition, but it will take some time to make it feel the same.

I keep struggling with the tree idea Franci\ud83d\udc1dEugenia Hoffman. I need my husband to put it up. It's a 6 ft tall pre-lit tree. He's been saying, we don't need decorations this year and I haven't argued. But today, I had a spark of light hit me and I think I do want to decorate. It does something for the spirit. Good for you, and your right, there is something magical about the lights. Thanks for the reminder!

Thanks Wayne. Actually, I'm trying to take it as easy as I can Wayne Yoshida. Because the new year looks like it's going to be very busy indeed. I didn't lose a single client by leaving town, even picked up a couple new ones. Nobody cares where you are anymore.
