The 5 Steps

R
egardless of whether a book is self-published or traditionally published, there are five steps to publishing.

STEP 1: WRITING
You can’t publish a book without first writing it. If you’re reading this guide, you probably have an idea for a book, or you’ve already written some or all of it.

STEP 2: EDITING
When you write a book you make thousands of creative decisions. By the time you’re done your first or second or third draft, it becomes nearly impossible for you to grasp how a reader would experience your manuscript for the first time. An editor provides fresh eyes and improves the quality of your writing.

STEP 3: DESIGN
Once the manuscript is edited, a designer creates a compelling cover that will help the book sell. The designer also does the interior layout of the book to ensure a comfortable reading experience, and ensures the design files meet all the specifications so that the book can be distributed, both in print and ebook formats.

STEP 4: DISTRIBUTION
Once you have a finished product, you need to make it available for people to buy. Nowadays, most sales channels are available to self-published authors. Also, because print-on-demand (POD) technology permits printing one book at a time, it isn’t necessary to spend any money on printing.
Distribution includes listing your book with major online retailers like Chapters.com and Amazon.com, making your book available to brick-and-mortar bookstores through a distributor, and automatically printing and fulfilling orders, collecting payment, and issuing royalties. Distribution also includes ebook sales via the Kindle, Kobo and other ebookstores. Brick-and-mortar bookstores can’t be forced to stock your book, but they can be given easy access to it via mainstream distributors.

STEP 5: PROMOTING
Once your book is available for sale, you need to get people to hear about it and create “buzz.” Promoting activities include issuing press releases and approaching traditional print and broadcast media for interviews or book reviews, online marketing using social media, and events, such as a book launch.

For those curious about self-publishing via Lulu, I recommend speaking to Jeffrey Strickland, who is a prolific writer and who has successfully published several books, including a couple of textbooks on Lulu. I've known Jeff for years back on LinkedIn and from the Unflencers (tm) group on LI, and here on beBee. He is a straight-shooter and has as much or more experience self-publishing as anyone I know. He's also written about publishing on Lulu a couple of times. So if you contact him, I am sure he'll give you the benefit of his solid experience and give you the links to his articles about Lulu. Tell Jeff I sent you. Cheers!

Susan \ud83d\udc1d Botello that is good news ! Keep us posted !
Dear followers - So to conclude, in a modern society, you are busy being a dad, a mum, and do your day job. So when it comes to delegate, get the best awarded start-ups to help you through processes. Ask them for references, compare the results and sign-up with the best. You spend thousands , then learn how to price your piece of work. Ask successful clients how they made it. Maybe some will mentor you. Get your IP protected, watermark your work. And believe me, don't be naive in the publishing industry,,have a budgeted plan for your journey. Planing and financing is the key to obtain tangible results.
When a Canadian University is endorsing you and your company gets rewarded. It is because it is a good idea. So how many copies you sold with the don't spend thousands method...you didn't answer last time...

Why Pay ...? Probably because it create jobs.. so people can have one and live decently. Why pay...LOL...yes why pay...hahaha the best ever...if people have jobs, that authors pay for it, then we can finance retirements pension for example. Why pay...lol... And the verb ..hire..implies you pay...so why hire freelancers if you do not intend to pay them. People are free to pay or not pay. My comment is this one: paying the cost of a service is the basis of our modern economy, so salaries are paid, and retirement plans finance. Paying is a sane habit.

Yes, Paul \, I agree. Producing the book, whether in digital or print form, is mechanical. And one may or may not decide to do that oneself, depending on what one is prepared to invest. But if one wants to be paid for one's ideas and work in bringing those together in a useful or enjoyable form (the Book), then as I see it, the best course is to self-publish. And the numbers these days heavily favor self-publishing for non-bestselling authors. Consider that if one signs a contract with a publisher for a 10% royalty on the retail price of the book (the effective royalty is often less because of discounts negotiated with large booksellers, returns, promotion expenses taken off the top, and so on) -- but for convenience, assume 10%. This means an author would make $1.00 for each copy of a book sold at $10.00 retail. However, if an author self-publishes these days, he or she might be able to produce the book at a cost of, say, $4.00 per copy, then sell the book for $6.95 (thereby increasing it chance at sales), yet still make a gross profit on each book sale of $3.00. And if all the sales are going to come from the promotional efforts of the author anyway, well... you can see the point. The only advantage to dealing with a publisher is if the publisher is going to use its contacts to promote and sell the book. Which it won't, unless it's prepared to go on the line for an advance on royalties (very rare these days). Years ago, Canadian publishers could make money on a book by picking up a Canada Council subsidy. But instead of making the situation better, that mad it worse. Because there was even less incentive to promote and sell books. Cheers!

Thanks Paul \ for these constructive insights as always, you are inspiring all of us ! Big Publishers will invest marketing in you once you are out there chunking their market shares ...And yes, Whatever has to be produced is ''hoho'' -a huge load of efforts, experience and knowledge. But for entrepreneurs and explorers the goal isn't all the time about the destination, but also in the Journey. You get new faces, experiences, and the satisfaction to keep the hands on the wheel as far as you can. Canada Loves ISBN and ISBN loves Canada. There are so many things to discover about Canada...so many... And yes make no mistakes..if you are to see... your crops growing....you will have to pay for it. God speed with weather and odds ! Paul \ and Everyone, there is a book-publishing couple in the Fort Lauderdale area, whom I've known for many years. Gary and Carol Rosenberg provide all manner of services to would-be self-publishing authors at, I believe, reasonable pricing. They are well-experienced and honest. Their website also provides some down-to-earth advice. And I recommend that, if you're looking to self-publish a book, you take a look at what they have to say at: www.thebookcouple.com

Excellent points, Paul \. Writing, editing, and producing the book is less than half the battle. Unless the project is entirely for vanity. Marketing the book is the toughest piece of the puzzle to fit. And you are right, it doesn't matter whether you hire a small firm to publish your book. Unless the publisher invests in marketing and promotion, you will save money by simply publishing it yourself. And make no mistake, if you are required to invest cash into producing the book, you are self-publishing, whatever it's called on the publisher's website. Cheers!
This company has been featured at 2016 VIATEC Awards - Startup of the Year, for a good reasons. Some Clients (authors) are satisfied by their service and it is a great Canadian startup making the Canadian economy move forward with their business model. So for everyone that knows how economics works in the professional world. A product has a calculated price because it has some compound costs calculation attached to all business processes that are attached to it , to get it in the hands of the targeted customers. This company offers related services to self-publishing authors.

That is your opinion. And we feel Happy for you. How many copies have you sold ? Please share with us your experience.

If an e-book is your goal and only in digital version, you do not need that type of services, What you need is a strategy and some software apps to produce the e-book and to watermark it. Some servers allows sniffing and tracking the watermarks through the web for illegal distribution and sometime full copyrights infringements that are more often than we believe. Now For canadians if would strongly recommend to IP protect it with the CIPO. And have a chat about what the content of the work would be. And is it to be turned into a multimedia piece of work: example: kindle version. software, mobile app e-book version etc...My door is always open for consultation.
Who has tried self-publishing? How did it work for you? What tools/approach did you use? How about ebooks? I have 2 to do.
Positive and non-deceptive comments are welcome, for the sake of freedom of speech, entrepreneurship and publishing. The Good News is with a paper book...lol...wait..you cannot content filter it if you are self published ....hahahaaaaaaaaaaaaa !
Bill Stankiewicz, \ud83d\udc1d Brand Ambassador thanks for your support ! You have always been a fair bee and great positive supporter, bringing a fair mindset to the hives. If you like it, make the buzz around in hives that you cherish the most.
