What will happen over the next twenty years...

What will happen over the next twenty years...

20322513.jpg
I have never been much of a futurist.

I am more one to muddle through the muck of the moment and work through whatever comes my way. Recently though I've been thinking I should take a different tact because we're in the throws of dramatic change and with that, amazing opportunity. Maybe it's time for me to take pause and think about what the future may hold (and like a good surfer, look for a fine wave to catch). If you have ever attempted to surf you know the best wave is found in the green water — it's where you can catch the wave early, ride it longer, and have more fun.

This is something I am actively exploring and will be quick to ask about.

So I ask you, "What do you think will happen over the next twenty years?"

As I start to explore the green water of the future, here are some of the considerations that have resonated with me so far... be it as opportunities to explore, problems to anticipate, or simply considerations to prepare for (aka adapt to).

 • Our natural environment will continue to change, and all that stuff we make will continue to spill over into it.
 • Our symbiosis with technology will continue to a point of physical change and it will blur the lines regarding what it is to be a human being.
 • Artificial Intelligence will impact the definition of work and what people do.
 • The established structures of trust, power, and government will be challenged by technology and by the evolving definition of work and how people find fulfilment.
 • National identity will be displaced by city and corporate states.
 • The "networks of connection" will challenge the ability of people to connect, relate, and trust at a personal level.
 • We will live longer, but probably not healthier.

As I say I am no futurist so this is a conversation I am eager to have with anyone who has some thoughts. Please let me know what you think (or know) — it's greatly appreciated.

At this point, all I know is we are on the cusp of substantial change, I want to be part of it, and a person can do amazing things in twenty years.

Thanks of the comment Jerry Fletcher... I really have to dig deeper into blockchain. All those middlemen aren't going to go into the night quietly though. It will be interesting to be part of this.

I do hope you are right Brian McKenzie... as I mentioned earlier I can't help being concerned with the kind of trouble we can get ourselves into as a species when we have "extra" time on our hands. And unless we head for the stars there are anymore "new worlds" to conquer — it definitely is easy to head to the dark side of human nature.

Thanks for the comments ... I think you are right, people who can afford it will be tempted to change themselves with technology and even their very genetics with new technologies like CRISPR/CAS. We will definitely challenge ourselves as what it is to be human... I think.

Thanks for the comment Harvey Lloyd... at the core I am concerned with what we will do with all of our "free time"... have we become enlighten enough to expand our personal creativity, imagination and spirit or will we default to what humans do best when we have "free time" on our hands. The darker side of human nature does capture the imagination.

Thanks for the comment Javier 🐝 beBee... Based on some recent events I understand why you are so excited about Blockchain... congratulations and now you have me excited. I'm going to do some deeper research as I am still struggling with to see the future... I am starting to get it though.

Sadly I think you are right CityVP 🐝 Manjit... I think how we have defined the middle class over the past sixty years is a aberration, and we will slide back into the extreme separation of wealth between the "haves" and "have nots" that was the norm over the centuries. Our standard of living will just be higher.

I have to agree with Javier, Block Chain Technology is, in my view, the next evolution in networking. I''ve spoken o the subject and will continue to promote it using the term "New World Networking." The technology can be used for other things as well and is currently being used to leapfrog current methodologies in banking, trading and charity.

I think in the next twenty years people will become slaves of the products and technology they use. Thinking will be curbed as we have AI to think for us now and hence children will not be able to look for answers if stranded in a desert or forest. From what we see, to what we eat/wear will be defined to us unless it is people like us who will battle these forced changes on us. As for those who have access to technology & a good livelihood will thrive, succeed and become entrepreneurs of tomorrow. Which is a good thing as long as they still remain human and are able to develop and grow along with the society.

From a material perspective we can guess at the next twenty. But from a human perspective it is only one of two outcomes. Humans are celebrated and freed or trained and enslaved. Many of your points would be the nemesis of humanity as we celebrate material success. Material success most often comes at human expense. Many will be advantaged by the growth, only to find that they no longer have customers. All of the customers have been replaced with machines, computers and ideals of wealth. I am not against the future but until we realize that we are slowly raising the temperature on humanity the future looks cooked. We can get to the future and be human at the same time. Unfortunately many want the the future then they can be human.
Very interesting. I am exciting about disrupting tecnologies. We have a technological revolution that's happening right now. Probably everyone is obviously familiar with technological trends that are going on: Mobility, Social Media, Internet of Things, Big Data, Machine Learning, The Cloud, Drones & Robotics....But it's my view that the technology likely to have the greatest impact on the world for the next 20 years is actually not the mobility, big data, cloud computing, machine learning, IA, etc, it's the technology behind cryptocurrencies, like bitcoin and it's called the blockchain. I will be writing on this subject soon. Thank you Graham🐝 Edwards

In twenty years, for a poor person poverty will still look the same. For a rich person, there will be countless new ways to spend their money.

I would like to say something smart but cannot come up with anything, space exploration has always captured my imagination I would expect some developments in that area, now Confucius said something along the lines of nothing new happen to people it is that things happen to new people so much for evolution hey :-)
