Who doesn't want a better quality of life?
Being active as a way of life is known to increase the quality of life you live. Who doesn't want a better quality of life? Is it really essential to go to the gym and pay those monthly fees when you have so many creative options in your day-to-day routines? Think about it, what are you realistically going to do? Most of the time, we join a gym, get busy and then end up doing what is realistic anyway...managing a home, working, and maintaining those valuable relationships. Somewhere in there we have to workout and manage our personal health and well being. Here are some suggestions to integrate wellness as a lifestyle:
1. Park at the back of the parking lot.
When you go to the mall, to work, or to a restaurant, choose the parking space that that farthest from the door. You will save the time and frustration exerted by others in seeking the closest spot, plus you will benefit from the longer walk.
2. Get a pedometer.
Count those steps. Getting and using a pedometer makes you mindful of the activity you are currently using and then step it up a notch. Aim for at least 10,000 steps each day, but any increase is likely to bring health benefits, so don’t feel bad if you can’t get up to 10,000 right away.
3. Take the stairs rather than the elevator.
Many people use stair-walking as part of their regular workout routine. When you visit an office building and must travel to another floor, opt to use the stairs. If there are more floors than you can handle, use the stairs for a few floors and take the elevator the rest of the way. Similarly, while shopping at a multi-level mall, opt for the stairs rather than the escalator.
3. Turn your cleaning into exercise.
When dusting hard-to-reach places, take the opportunity to implement some stretching exercises. When picking things up off the floor, do some squats or lunges. Be creative and enjoy multitasking the cleaning process by combining it with physical exercise.
4. Go for a walk with family or friends after dinner.
Getting outdoors even for a short while is always good for the soul. Walking with family members or friends can be a great time to catch up, get some exercise and meet neighbors.
5. Use commercial breaks for traditional exercises.
During the first break of your favorite show, get on the floor and do a few push ups. During the next break, try a few sit ups. For the break after that, take a walk around your home, including a trip up and down stairs if available. A few minutes of exercise here and there can make a big difference in how you feel about yourself and in your overall health.
6. Choose video games that require movement.
Most popular gaming systems produce games that require the player to get up and move around, including some games that are designed specifically for exercise regimens. If you enjoy playing video games, take advantage of the options available to incorporate some physical exertion into your gaming.
7. Use active transportation and public transit.
Sometimes opting to take public transportation can add an element of physical activity that is quite beneficial. Often times public transportation require walking to a bus stop or even taking a scooter, require parking and walking, plus saves a lot of extra money in gas and auto wear and tear. Not only that, you gain the benefit of getting outdoors, seeing sights you wouldn't otherwise and you get fresh air. A much added benefit to overall wellness in the greater scheme of things.
One of the best ways to deal with inactivity is to put into your lifestyle some form of practical actions that lead to more physical activity. Over time, adding a bit of exercise into your daily routine can have a dramatic effect on your health. Particularly if you struggle to find the time and discipline required to work out in the gym, you can greatly benefit from working physical activity into your life in more subtle, less intrusive ways.
