Why A Lot Of Stuff Is So Fucked Up... Con't

STORIES & OPINION FROM THE QUIET SIDE OF THE LAKE

4 & TILL

Almost 2 years ago I wrote a post called Why A Lot Of Things Are So F**ked Up. An Opinion. https://www.bebee.com/producer/@jim-murray/why-a-lot-of-stuff-is-so-f-cked-up-an-opinion

Back then I determined that things were fucked up pretty bad. Since that time, they have really only gotten worse.

Using the ** Instead of the ck in Fucked was symbolic to some extent and made its own little statement of conformity and political correctness.

Anyone who knows me understands that I am nowhere near being politically correct and haven’t been for quite some time, ever since I actually learned how to stop giving a shit about what people thought.

So here we go...

Reason One: The Loss of Critical Thinking Capability

If | sound like I'm gurgling
when | talk, it's because
I'm drowning in a sea of

political correctness. The loss of the capability of critical thought is a big part of the reason that things are so fucked up.

People have lost the ability to think for themselves. Not everybody, maybe not even the majority of them. But just enough to fuck things up for everybody else.

The most current example that I could site is the United States. As everybody drawing a breath knows, a guy named Donald Trump is president of the United States.

And the reason he got to be president, because he is neither qualified for the job or possessed of the temperament to actually handle the job, was that he saw (and this is his only skill), that there were a whole bunch of people out there who could be made to think any way he told them to think, provided he got up in front of them, shouted really loud and filled the void inside their pointed little heads with the things he wanted them to believe.

Petty dictators all around the world seize and hold power in the same way. But there were very few of us who ever believed this could happen in America, land of the free, home of the brave and all that crap.

It’s also, as we have sadly discovered, the land of the empty-headed.

And that’s why Donald Trump is president.

Now that he is president, his job is to keep all the people who supported him filled with fake hope that he’s going to make their lives the Valhalla they all feel they deserve. And so he just keeps on lying to them. And they keep on cheering for him.

Hopefully, sooner or later this will implode on him. Because bullshit is very heavy and he’s producing it at a phenomenal rate.

Reason Two: The Overkill of Technology

The incredible advancements of technology and all the software required to make it work is another reason things are so fucked up.

We are constantly being inundated with news of technological advancement that is doing all kinds of good things to make life better.

There are cybernetic appendages that will help people with missing limb or two, function normally. There are cars and trucks that drive themselves so that you can sit back and watch a movie while you are going wherever you need to go. There is all manner of inter-connectivity that means we can reach out to anyone anywhere. There are 3-D printers that can actually build whole fucking houses.

But as great as all this stuff is, it is all fucking things up and there are two reasons for that.

1. People have always been fearful of change, and change is happening at a mile a minute these days. I consider myself a fairly astute observer of shit out there and I’m even skeptical of our ability to adapt quickly enough, especially when our brains are always playing catch-up with all these amazing gizmos.

2. Society has not even come close to figuring out how the huge displacement of working humans to non-working humans via workplace technology advances, is going to work.

This is because our society is still set up on a system of needing to work to get money to buy the stuff you need to enjoy your life and actually live it in relative comfort. If you take work out of that equation, which technological advancements are doing, what the hell do you replace it with? Good question. No answers yet.

So what you end up with is the potential for a huge fuck up, when the intersection point between humans at work meets machines that will do the work for them at work.

Reason Three: The Fuckin’ Internet

d83f6b7b.pngFinally, although, this really isn’t the end, I firmly believe that things are so fucked up because of the very medium I am using to reach you all with this message.

There are, in point of fact, so many reasons that if I were to list them all, it would render this article too long for human consumption.

In fact, it may already be there. So I will give you just a few.

1. The Internet is very quickly morphing into a single entity with several billion working parts. The closer it gets to becoming one entity, the greater human dependence will be on it.

Oh sure, you can talk about firewalls and cybersecurity till you’re blue in the face, but the fact is that sooner or later someone is going to figure out how to attack the whole system and, probably just to prove they can, will.

And they will shut it down. And when they do. That will be the biggest fuckup anyone can imagine.

2. The Internet is the home of scammers, thieves, charlatans, anarchists, racists, misogynists, sexists, con men and conversely, all the simple souls they prey upon. Every day, if you go looking, you will hear stories about how people got fucked over or indoctrinated to some cult or radicalized or bullied or just plain made a fool of by some fucked up shit they got involved with online. Nuff said.

3. The Internet is full of shit. It’s full of creatures who are considered brilliant because they know how to take shit from other brilliant people and spin it. A lot of these people are the ones who are spewing crap about social selling and realizing your full potential as an internet dweller, about building like and trust as the keys to developing solid business relationships, and about buying their books that will show you how all this stuff is done, painlessly.

And you know what? It works for some people. Not everybody. In fact not about 90-95% of everybody. But you would never know that from listening to these bozos preaching from the New Cyber Testament.

And as a result people spent massive amounts of time, here, trying to create content that will push some magic button, post a meme that goes viral and exposes their brilliance to millions. Find that dream job and get hired on the strength of their fabulous resume alone. etc. etc.

And this folks, since it involves not just millions, but billions, could be the biggest reason of all that things are so fucked up.

Post Script: Now, I’m not advocating that we all just pack up our shit and move back to 1977 or anything but what I am saying is that these opinions are not based on stuff that miraculously popped into my head one day.

They are the result of a lot of observation and the transcription of many mental notes that I have made on my voyage through cyberspace and reality.

You can agree or disagree. That’s what this is all about anyway. Have a great Sunday wherever you are. Jim Out.

You covered a lot of ground, Jim, and I don't disagree with anything you said. The growing superficiality of social media and people's limited attention spans for news bits, alongside the escalating intolerance on university campuses for opposing views (a cornerstone of a liberal education), are contributing to society's downfall. And on Trump, just let me note that the current state of volatility on nuclear arms (witness Putin's recent dog and pony show on his country's alleged new nuclear weapons) has me reaching for the Depends. I'm just finishing Chris Matthews' bio on JFK, preceded by two other books on the Cuban missile crisis, and I'm pretty confident that had Trump been president during that period that the civilized world have essentially ended.

Jim, I'm not going back to my old Remington Manual and carbon paper. Ain't gonna happen. I believe it's like my Mom used to say, "You got to take the bad with the good 'cause tain't nothin that's all one or the tother. Just keep pushin the bad aside if you can. If you can't, then walk away." Trouble is in today's world I figure the malevolent mini-minded bastards will come hunt you down. No, I don't have an answer but I'm cogitating on it.

Well said, Jim. The world is fucked up beyond belief, and you've pinpointed many of the reasons. Technology will ultimately destroy humanity if we're not careful, and Trump has already destroyed much of what made America great. Fuck!

I'm thinking creating some robot dung beetles to clean up the World Wide Web. Also breeding some giant dung beetles to deal with the rest of the crap.
