Essential responsibilities
Demonstrate Chatham-Kent's core values and competencies
Provide locates of underground/buried infrastructure, complete with drawings to contractors, utilities and individuals
Perform pre and post-construction inspections including photographs and reports
Collect data from field using GPS equipment or layout data in field
Inspect new water services installed from curb box to house including trench depth, pipe type and any appurtenances
Perform regulatory water sampling, trouble shooting and maintenance in the field for existing and new infrastructure
Occasionally check curb boxes at residences to ensure no connections have been done illegally
Operate valves and hydrants
Operate leak detection equipment
Operate curb box locator and line tracing equipment
Prepare as-constructed sketches/drawings of infrastructure
Ensure the security of the water/wastewater facilities and systems
Perform basic routine and non-routine maintenance including repair and replacement of equipment as required, including the treatment, distribution and collection systems
Ensure conformance with DWQMS (Drinking Water Quality Management System) and compliance with Certificates of Approval, regulations and guidelines
Coordinate the acquisition of quotes for supplies and services according to the municipal purchasing policies
Ensure personnel safety regulations, procedures and standards are strictly observed
Operate water and wastewater facilities on an as needed basis
Essential qualifications
Secondary school diploma, plus post-secondary education in an environmental, construction or civil engineering related field
Three or more years of related experience
Excellent knowledge of all facets of a water distribution system and a wastewater collection system
Knowledge of equipment used to locate underground/buried infrastructure
Sound knowledge of standards established by Ministry of the Environment, PUC policies, procedures and contingencies and applicable regulations.
Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations
Knowledge of municipal purchasing policies
Ability to read engineering drawings and mapping software programs
Must be able to communicate effectively with the public and by the use of logic, tact and diplomacy, be able to respond effectively to those concerns
Knowledge of current community challenges and opportunities relating to the services provided
Knowledge of Trimble GPS equipment
Working knowledge of the following software programs: ESRI's ArcGIS, Geocortex, JD Edwards (or other related work order software program)
Other qualifications
Diploma in a computer related course an asset
Training courses in damage prevention for utilities an asset
Certifications, memberships, licenses
Water Treatment Class 1 Certificate or OIT
Wastewater Treatment Class 1 Licence or OIT
Work environment/hours of work
This position will work both indoors and outdoors.
This position works weekdays; and may be required to work on-call after hours and on-call on weekends
Employees designated for on-call duties must be available within 45 kilometres of their home plant/facility

Essential physical and/or safety requirements
Physical coordination and dexterity to use hand tools such as drills, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.
Testing equipment used to troubleshoot systems; manual dexterity to operate computers and equipment such as locator wand, etc.
Attention to detail for short periods of time when taking readings; ability to shift focus quickly in response to emergencies or other priorities in the workplace; maintaining focus on multiple tasks with varying priorities, deadlines and demands
Physical strength to manipulate, move and reposition equipment; regular lifting of materials and equipment weighing 4 to 9 kg and occasional lifting of equipment up to 34 kg; frequent standing for prolonged periods of time; working in confined spaces
Frequent exposure to loud noises from equipment; working outdoors in excessive cold, hot or adverse weather conditions; working with hazardous chemicals
