The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has an opening for a Child Care & Early Years Student for the summer of 2024.

This position will start approximately May 6, 2024, for a period up to August 30, 2024.


Job description


The Child Care & Early Years Student will assist with program development and delivery and interact with children and caregivers at the EarlyON centres and special projects as needed.


Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent's core values and competencies
  • Assist with program development and delivery and interact with children and caregivers at the EarlyON centres
  • Support early learning opportunities and assist in promotion of programs and services at community events and parentchild programs, in both traditional and nontraditional locations throughout the community
  • Assist in organizing files and office resources
  • Provide clerical support to Child Care and Early Years staff as needed
  • Assist with special projects to support Child Care & Early Years operations
  • Interact with and support clients requesting information and services offered through the Municipality of Chatham-Kent Child Care & Early Years
  • Retrieve, analyse and enter data regarding confidential client information
  • Maintain client confidentiality; make decisions regarding what information needs to be shared and what needs to be maintained as confidential
  • Work occasional evening and weekend hours

Essential qualifications

  • To qualify for this summer student position, students must currently be enrolled in school fulltime for the 2023/2024 winter term (normally ending April, May or June) and/or returning to school fulltime in the 2024 fall term (normally starting in August or September)
  • Preference will be given to students currently enrolled in a related postsecondary program, including child studies, Early Childhood Education, social work, psychology, sociology
  • Experience working in an office environment utilizing computer programs
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Strong customer service skills and experience working with the public
  • Ability to learn new tasks quickly
  • Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook (or similar software programs)

Work environment/hours of work

  • This position works indoors and outdoors
  • This position works weekday hours, with occasional evening and weekend hours

COVID-19 Vaccination
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent no longer requires a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.


Driver's licence/vehicle requirements


Because this position would be required to travel, a valid Province of Ontario driver's licence with a reliable motor vehicle is preferred.


Essential physical and/or safety requirements

  • Sitting: constant sitting in a chair (sitting in a chair using the telephone and computer)
  • Reaching: frequent reaching above shoulder, below shoulder (Client files are retrieved several times a day from a 6 drawer filing cabinet and from the "termination room" storage)
  • Hands: frequent gripping, pinching; constant fine finger dexterity (movement), mousing (constant work on the computer)
