Our Team:

Our Sudbury Operations have been in existence for more than 100 years.

With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world.

Sudbury is also home to several administrative sites serving both the Ontario Operations as well as all our North Atlantic Operations.


Port Colborne is home to our Nickel Refinery where raw materials from our Sudbury operations are processed into electrocobalt and precious metals and serves as a distribution centre for finished nickel products.


The Opportunity


The incumbent would report to the Construction Manager who will lead a team of construction professionals to successfully execute the projects under the North Atlantic Project Group Sudbury Mines Projects & Studies area and will participate as a member of the Integrated Owners project team.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Manage the underground development process and employees in the NAPG Sudbury Mining Projects area of accountability.
  • Understand, implement and promote Vale's SHE Policies and Procedures.
  • Participate in and contribute to the development of a Construction Execution Plan and schedule for the area and for the total site.
  • Conduct detailed constructability reviews of engineering drawings and specifications during the project design phase.
  • Explore and identify additional opportunities for pre assembly and modularization.
  • Assist in the development (lateral, vertical, etc.) contract bidder prequalification, tendering, and contractor selection processes.
  • Participate in the development of logistics plans with resources from other project team areas, owner's team, expediting, warehousing, contracts and procurement department resources.
  • Work closely with underground mine construction project teams to coordinate underground project efforts and ensure facility turnovers meet expectations and required timelines.
  • Review preservation plans for development related equipment and materials as required.
  • Report to owner's project management team on all matters relating to development in his/her area.
  • Provide guidance, direction, and assistance to contractors through Engineering, Development, Construction, and Precommissioning phases of the project.
  • Closely participate, with the contractor, in the monitoring and coordination of contractors' productivity and performance.
  • Monitor the implementation of contractor QC programs and assist with the implementation of the Owner's team QA programs at the site.
  • Provide assistance to SHE team to ensure contractors' compliance with established safety and environmental procedures and standards.
  • Assist with safety audits and investigations.
  • Ensure that work is completed in accordance with contract scopes.
  • Monitor changes in work scope and represent owner in the scope change authorization process, as established in the project procedures.
  • Monitor contractors' progress and verify and approve contractors' progress billings.
  • Participate in resolution of disputes and determination of priorities when conflicts are encountered.
  • Review and recommend for approval of construction quality management plan, construction inspection and test records.
  • Plan the integration between the development completion activities, underground construction completion activities, and commissioning activities ensuring clear responsibilities are defined between construction/development contractors, vendor representatives, and commissioning teams for successful handover of mine development activities to construction or commissioning teams.
  • Assist with the development of routine project reporting.
  • Review and approve all incident / injury reports and ensure the appropriate action plans are developed to deal with patterns, conditions and behaviors.
  • Assist owner's commissioning team in the preparation and assembly of precommissioning documentation.
  • Ensure that the mine development and installations are completed as detailed in specific contract and project design documents.
  • Manage the identification, classification and rectification of the construction punch list to ensure contractors deliver scope according to contractual obligations.
  • Monitor the preparation and accuracy of asbuilt documentation.

About You

Education**:

  • Relevant University Degree or College Diploma prefer
