The Office of the Associate Vice-President, Academic (AVPA) is at the centre of a number of academic support units and strategic projects related to supporting and advancing Teaching and Learning at the University of Waterloo, in addition to governance and quality assurance of academic programs and providing supports for those leading day-to-day instructional activities across all Faculties.
- playing a key role in developing and executing high profile strategic events designed to highlight intellectual contributions, research, and strategic projects with the objective of helping stakeholders identify collaboration opportunities; and elevate, celebrate, and showcase activities related to Teaching and Learning at Waterloo, with the objective of building a culture of appreciation for the academic side of the Waterloo experience.
- developing and maintaining communication channels (websites, newsletters, social media, etc.) designed to keep internal stakeholders informed about ongoing Teaching and Learning activities;
- interacting with members of project teams, faculty members and instructors, staff, and students about ongoing strategic projects and new ideas;
- coordinating key details required to keep projects and events moving forward, including timelines, deadlines, project evaluation and continuous improvement, and documentation.
Bringing a keen eye for detail and organization and a capacity to multi-task and deal confidently with
changes in plans, the Strategic Projects, Communications, and Community Engagement Specialist is responsible for conceptualizing, planning, and implementing projects and plans in addition to aiding in the development of strategic communications.
This role requires diplomacy, an infectious enthusiasm for teaching and learning, a solid knowledge base with respect to pedagogy, and the capacity to communicate confidently about teaching and learning projects.
In addition to reporting to the Communications Associate within the Office of the AVPA (and working indirectly with staff within the academic support units that fall under the AVPA portfolio), the incumbent will work closely with the Managing Director of the Teaching Innovation Incubator.
Responsibilities:
Event management
- Leads the planning and logistics for small
- Designs promotional materials; manages contributors and panelists; sets up events; arranges necessary media (and/or central communications) supports; arranges invitations, facilities and catering; coordinates volunteers and staff supporting events; and liaises with campus partners (e.g., parking, UW police, plant operations) and external vendors
- Solicits and compiles feedback for postevent debriefs; implements feedback to continuously improve future events and streamline existing processes
- Partners with stakeholders to prepare, coordinate, and/or deliver messaging designed to engage internal stakeholders
- Develops, updates, maintains, and tracks traffic on multiple websites connected to academic support units and strategic projects associated with the AVPA portfolio
- Assesses communication channels and messaging with an eye to continuous improvement of impact
- Coordinates messaging with Waterloo's central Communications team
- Develops and implements internal communication and promotional strategies for raising awareness, encouraging participation, and sharing information, successes, and opportunities
- Tracks and attends teaching and learningrelated activities taking place on campus, from community events to classes utilizing interesting teaching approaches
- Contributes to a list of ideas for Teaching and Learning stories to be shared with internal stakeholders, and writes such stories when time and opportunity allow
- Provides daytoday supervision of coop students employed by the AVPA office to support communications
