DESCRIPTION


The child life specialist will provide opportunities for therapeutic and leisure play, promote optimum development of children and youth, and help patients and families adjust to and understand health care experiences.

As part of the inter-professional team, the child life specialist will prepare and support children and youth during medical tests and procedures.

This position may involve evening and weekend hours.

  • Assess the psychosocial needs of patients and families using theories of human growth and development and family systems.
  • Assess patient's development level, temperament and coping style and provide a variety of play and therapeutic activities which promote selfexpression, understanding, and mastery of medical experiences.
  • Incorporating individual therapeutic goals to match patient needs.
  • In collaboration with the interprofessional team, develop individual treatment plans in accordance with prognosis, limitations, disease process, nature of illness, and available social supports.
  • Organize and prepare activities to promote therapeutic goals taking into consideration a variety of mobility needs and a wide age span.
  • Use developmentally appropriate medical teaching tools to prepare patients, siblings, and families for diagnostic and treatment procedures.
  • Provide emotional support during intensified stress points and utilize stress reduction techniques to facilitate adaptive coping.
  • Support the implementation of child life special events, celebrations, and groups.
  • Supervise volunteers working within the programs.
  • Participates in education and improvement activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Vulnerable Sector, Police Record Check (PRC) (Essential)
  • Baccalaureate in Child Life, Child and Family Studies, Therapeutic Recreation or related field (Essential)
  • Current Child Life Certification (CCLS) through Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) (Essential)
  • Bilingualism (English/French) (preferred)
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a pediatric health care setting (Essential)

RÉSUMÉ DES FONCTIONS
- Évaluer les besoins psychosociaux des patients et de leur famille à l'aide des théories sur la croissance humaine, le développement et les systèmes familiaux.
- Évaluer le niveau de développement du patient, son tempérament, son style d'adaptation et fournir toute une gamme d'activités thérapeutiques et ludiques visant à promouvoir l'expression de soi, la compréhension et la maîtrise des expériences médicales.

  • Planifier des activités incorporant des objectifs thérapeutiques individuels qui correspondent aux besoins des patients.
  • De concert avec l'équipe multidisciplinaire, élaborer des plans de traitement individuels en conformité avec le pronostic, les limites, l'évolution et la nature de la maladie, ainsi que la disponibilité des moyens de soutiens sociaux.
  • Organiser des aires d'activités afin de faciliter les activités thérapeutiques qui tiennent compte de besoins divers de mobilité et d'une vaste fourchette d'âges.
