Reporting to the Director, Professional Practice and working closely alongside the Manager, Professional Practice, the Clinical Educator - Extern Program & Nursing Workforce Development will lead the planning, delivery, coordination and evaluation of the Clinical Extern program, as well as assist with other corporate initiatives to support the nursing workforce at THP.

This will be achieved through innovative approaches to developing and delivering clinical orientation and education, active mentorship and supervision of Clinical Externs, ongoing partnership with clinical programs to support Clinical Extern integration and experience, as well as support for other nursing workforce initiatives.

The Clinical Extern program employs learners from different health disciplines (including nursing, medicine, respiratory therapy and paramedicine) as unregulated care providers who support clinical teams across multiple sites, including Credit Valley Hospital, Mississauga Hospital, Queensway Health Centre and the Reactivation Care Centre.


Respoonsibilites

  • Lead overall design, delivery, coordination and evaluation of the Clinical Extern Program
  • Facilitate integration of Externs at the organizational and unit level, serving as a liaison between unit/program leadership and Professional Practice
  • Create, adapt and deliver orientation, education and preceptor resources, drawing on innovations and best practices in clinical learning
  • Maintain regular unit presence to support Extern transition to clinical environments, assessing and addressing ongoing Extern learning needs
  • Actively mentor Externs, coaching through new experiences and supporting their professional career growth
  • Collaborate with unit leadership and staff to ensure good role clarity and team processes with Externs to provide high quality, patient and familycentered care
  • Promote Extern wellness and team wellbeing through approaches such as the development of peertopeer networks
  • Support other corporate initiatives to support education and professional development of the nursing workforce at THP

Key Qualifications:


  • Registration (in good standing) with the College of Nurses of Ontario or other professional regulatory body
  • Minimum 3 years clinical experience acute care in medicine, surgery, complex continuing care, rehab, mental health, maternal newborn and child, and/or emergency areas, preferred
  • Previous experience as a clinical educator, instructor or placement supervisor an asset
  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing or other health professional program; Masters preferred
  • Understanding of adult learning and change management techniques in both classroom and clinical settings;
  • Ability to coach, mentor and provide feedback while fostering a positive work culture
  • Strong critical thinking, decision making, problemsolving and conflict resolutions skills
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • Commitment to evidencebased practice and quality improvement
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast paced environment
  • Computer Skills such as Power Point, Excel and Prezi
  • Excellent communication, presentation and facilitation skills
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Satisfactory attendance and performance required
