This position promotes fitness and leisure by delivering outdoor recreation programs for City parks and recreation centres through over 50 staff during the fall, winter and spring, to well over 250 in the summer for Green Shacks and day camps.

  • Strategically coordinate program delivery by providing leadership and support to directors, supervisors and operational staff on process, budget allocation and monitoring of service delivery of admission, membership, services and programs
  • Build a cohesive team through innovative and exciting recruitment plans which include the screening, hiring, scheduling, developing, directing, coaching, disciplining and evaluating of team members staff and volunteers
  • Research, plan and coordinate the implementation, supervision and evaluation of drop in and registered programs
  • Develop a budget and manage variances and financial planning for the year. This includes the creation of business plans for new or existing programs in which a return on investment is expected
  • Secure resources such as project grants, employment grants or sponsorships for initiatives which support the vision and mission of the section and unit as well as the branch and the city
  • Constantly review and determine the effectiveness of registration processes and marketing plans affecting the success of the unit's revenues
  • Work with Branch Sections to identify new opportunities for program and services development
  • Provide consultative services and training to all sections within the branch regarding the management of front line service and operational volunteers
  • Research best practices for all recreation, leisure centre and park programs and services to share with the Branch. This includes maintaining contact with national, provisional and regional support services
  • Contribute to building a healthy, respectful and productive workplace culture

Qualifications:


  • University Degree in Business, Education, Recreation Administration or a related degree in a specialised field
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in program development, staff management, customer experience enhancement, and/or volunteer management, of a scope and scale similar to what the parks, recreation centres and Attractions that exist within Community Facilities and Culture provide (Approx. 1200 volunteers and staff in a variety of facilities, in different geographical areas, various age groups, and various activities business units to consult with)
  • Familiarity working with Volunteers is an asset
  • Familiarity with Intelli (RAMS) software is an asset
  • Demonstrated ability and technical knowledge to develop, implement and manage programs and services for a variety of facilities or sites
  • Demonstrated ability and knowledge to lead group decision and group input processes
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and motivate employees to provide an excellent and integrated approach to their work
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement short and long term strategic plans
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and successfully in a multistakeholder environment.
  • Proficiency in Google office with strong administration skills
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, performance management, negotiation and facilitation skills
  • Proven ability to respond to difficult situations and manage conflict.
  • Previous work developing short and long term strategic plans for outdoor recreation programs
  • Proven ability to work in a consultative capacity providing information and referral to internal and external clients
  • Proven experience in program and/or event development and project management
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent)
