Research and Volunteer Associate
Hours:35 hours per week. May be required to work some evenings & weekends

Sistering is a multi-service agency for at-risk, socially isolated women and trans people in Toronto who are homeless or precariously housed.
Our harm reduction philosophy is a core element of all the work we do. We operate on a trauma-informed and relationship-based model.
***: The Research Associate is also responsible for managing the Volunteer Program at Sistering, working as part of a team to provide programming from a client-centered, trauma informed, harm reduction and anti-oppressive perspective.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Research:_
- Carry out project communication
- Coordinate Advisory teleconferences & other project meetings
- Develop research tools: research site questionnaire, common administrative datagathering tool,
- Identify, collect, and review sources for the literature review
- Travel to research sites to support memberresearcher training and conduct focus groups and individual interviews
- Conduct data entry and analysis (e.g. research site questionnaire, administrative data, member survey)
- Write reports
- Produce research updates for Advisory and funder
- Work with knowledge translation partners on project products
- Mobilize recommendations (e.g. organizing, policy interventions)
- Volunteer Programs:_
- Work collaboratively with staff to ensure volunteer programming supports the social, recreational, wellness and educational, and operational needs of Sistering, including the 24/7 Drop In and Parkdale Outreach location
- Manage volunteer recruitment, training and assignments
- Create appropriate volunteer opportunities and role descriptions based on the needs of the organisation
- Monitor, support, motivate and recognize volunteers and their work
- Coordinate and manage schedules of volunteer programs
- Take part in events to attract new volunteers
- Manage program budgets and resources
- Maintain databases, collect stats and undertake other administrative duties
- Submit volunteer statistics quarterly/yearly to the City, TCLHIN, United Way
- Advocacy and
Community Building:
_
- In collaboration with the Director of Programs & Services develop and maintain strong working relationships with other internal/external services and programs of Sistering
- In partnership with supervisors keep up to date on services and resources available as well as develop and maintain strong working relationships with community stakeholders
- Provide advocacy services on behalf of women within Sistering and with other agencies
- Develop and engage in advocacy in order to address systemic issues of homelessness and poverty
Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Mandatory_**:
- Educational background in social work/social services/human services work or equivalent education and lived experience is an asset
- Familiar with lowbarrier dropins, women and trans people's services, homelessness services sector, and activist and advocacy networks on homelessness, poverty, harm reduction, etc.
- Experience in conducting research, including designing research tools, carrying out interviews and focus groups, and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.
- Experience in Project Management, including creating and following work plans, coordinating meetings, activities and resources, producing project documents, and communicating with partners.
- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with volunteers, participants, team members, community partners and Board Members
- Able to work in intersecting frameworks relevant to the project: feminist, antiracism, antioppression, harm reduction, traumainformed, low barrier, client centred etc.
- Strong organizational skills, ability to selfdirect and carry out tasks independently
- Highly developed interpersonal skills and ability to build effective relationships with participants, team members and community partners
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong problemsolving, team building and priority setting skills
- Ability to work in a fast paced and demanding work environment
- Must work from an AR/AO framework, harm reduction and trauma informed lens.
- Other Qualifications:_
- Formal writing skills (e.g. reports, articles, funder communication, products for various audiences)
- Public speaking / presentation skills
- Knowledge of local, provincial, and federal policies and programs relating to housing, homelessness, and violence against women
- Experience with advocacy and activism on policy issues
- Additional languages besides English an asset
WORK CONDITIONS:
