ABOUT THE POSITION

This is maintenance work for NVRC facilities to ensure the effective operation of building assets and to perform repairs to buildings and equipment.

You will perform routine building and equipment condition inspections; conduct repairs and operational duties; respond to service emergency calls; identify and assess issues; schedule and escort contractors as required; ensure service and safety standards; and maintain computerized records related to the work.

Considerable independence of judgement and action in day-to-day activities is exercised but complex repairs or major expenditures are referred to a superior who reviews work performance in terms of attainment of desired objectives and conformance to established standards.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform a variety of routine building and equipment condition inspections for NVRC facilities through preventative and corrective maintenance plans.
  • Inspect the exterior and interior of buildings to identify potential issues and ensures all systems and related equipment are operational.
  • Maintain records and repair logs of equipment operation in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Perform building maintenance, repairs, and alteration duties related to plumbing, carpentry, electrical, heating and ventilation equipment, and related support systems; replace toilets and faucets; check boilers and locate leaks; repair leaks and blocked water lines; replace light ballasts and switches; troubleshoot and identify issues; and report need for more extensive servicing or repair to contract service providers and superior.
  • Respond to emergency service calls involving the performance of repairs for HVAC, plumbing, carpentry and electrical equipment not requiring trade certification; answer routine enquiries and provide assistance; identify nature of malfunction, assess or troubleshoot, and perform repairs or servicing as required; report complex problems to superior and call in service contractor as required.
  • Assist trades personnel with technical and more complex duties, as required.
  • Schedule and support service contractors as required; ensure services are provided to standards; and ensure building security and a safe environment.
  • Monitor and order materials and supplies related to maintenance and repairs within expense authority.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in building maintenance, servicing and repair work.
  • Sound knowledge of the functions and operations of heating, ventilation, plumbing and electrical equipment and related systems such as air conditioning equipment, and boilers in commercial heating systems.
  • Sound knowledge of occupational hazards and proper safety practices related to the work.
  • Ability to perform building maintenance tasks involving semiskilled plumbing, carpentry, and electrical tasks with strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to identify potential problems and to operate, maintain and make repairs or servicing as required.
  • Ability to use computerized systems to access information, adjust controls, and maintain records as required in the work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision under general instructions.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment related to the work.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by technical courses related to the work, plus sound related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence


This is a regular full-time position, working 37.5 hours per week including weekends, days or evenings based on operational needs.

The pay for this unionized position starts at $27.43 per hour (2021 rates) and has a pay structure with five steps which increase annually.
