    AECOM Canada Ltd is actively seeking a Principal Geotechnical / Tailings Engineer to join our Canadian Mining Market Sector Practice. This role can be based in our Burnaby, BC or Mississauga, ON offices. This position will work collaboratively with the Global Mining team members, to support the service needs of our clients on Canada-wide, USA based, and broader international projects.

    The focus of the position will be to lead and engage our highly skilled team of engineers and scientists in the technical execution of planning and design, construction, and operation of Waste Storage Facilities (WSF), Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF) and Water Management Facilities in support of mining of aggregates-base metals-precious metals.

    In the role you will develop, maintain, and enhance AECOM's team capabilities, market profile, position and branding as in relation to geotechnical / tailings engineering through our Canadian strategic plan. You will contribute to managing the risk exposure for AECOM and our clients across the globe.

    Your key responsibilities include:

    • The Principal Geotechnical / Tailings Engineer must have a strong technical background in geotechnical / tailings engineering with in-depth knowledge of design, construction, and closure practices for mining facilities, particularly covering full lifecycles of tailings and waste storage facilities, in a variety of geological settings, climatic conditions, and seismic regions across the world.
    • Furthermore, it is also expected that the Principal Geotechnical / Tailings Engineer will have a good business awareness and acumen. The person will need to possess a competent understanding of project/program management fundamentals, have a firm understanding of the relationship between technical delivery, project scope, costs, and schedule, as well as possess strong client and team interaction skills.
    • The Principal Geotechnical / Tailings Engineer will be a member of our global tailings and waste practice who will be assisting the Canadian mining market sector practice with strategic pursuits.
    • This role may assume Engineer of Record (EoR) and/or Deputy Engineer of Record DeoR) duties for tailings and/or mine storage facilities/water dams depending on complexity of structures.
    • Complementary to EoR / DEoR role, this position may include engaging in several key technical practice disciplines beyond engineering, including but are not limited to geology, hydrogeology, hydrology, hydraulics, water management, environmental practices/permitting, engineering geology, rock mechanics, process design and waste materials handling and transportation (e.g., pumping/piping of slurry tailings, trucking, conveyors). The role will imply varying degrees of technical oversight by clients, Independent Tailings Review Boards (ITRBs) and/or regulatory agencies.
    • Experience with siting studies, risk analyses, alternatives assessments, multiple accounts analyses, life cycle planning, and closure planning.
    • Construction experience, including construction materials and cost estimating,
    • Experience in relation to geotechnical aspects of civil-mine infrastructure.
    • Dam Safety Inspections and Reviews (tailings and water dams).
    • Leading, or supporting Third Party Reviews / Independent Design Reviews.
    • Identify the skill and expertise gaps to meet the current and future market opportunities and support suitable recruitment or development actions within the Canadian Mining Market Practice Sector Business Lines (Water / Environment, Transportation, etc.) to address them.
    • Assist in the recruitment of related high caliber engineers and scientists to our Mining Market Sector Practice.
    • Participate in conferences, seminars, interact with the media, public, and represent AECOM in social, community, and business situations.
    • Complete work in line with AECOM's Quality Management.
    • Travel as required (typically 20% of year); potentially more (up to 50% of year) in case of international (e.g., USA) deployments.
    • Management and mentorship of technical staff members may be required.
    Qualifications

    Minimum requirements:

    • Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Geotechnical, Geological or other similar engineering program
    • 8+ years of related work experience
    • Understanding and / or direct experience in relation to mining operations focused on tailings and mine waste management (e.g. in RTFE role).
    • Working knowledge related to geotechnical material characterization (particularly tailings, mined materials or borrow sources), slope stability and seepage analyses, seismic deformation analyses, liquefaction potential assessments, seismic hazard assessments, seepage and foundation characteristics of dams/tailings storage facilities, performance assessment, instrumentation and monitoring programs, etc.
    • Ability to work under minimal supervision and collaborate with others to achieve team results.
    • Ability to lead several projects or tasks with a sound understanding of overall goals, objectives, and costs to our clients.
    • Possess strong problem-solving skills and ability to make timely decisions or lead and develop others to do so.
    • Provide technical, safety and logistical leadership to project teams throughout the completion of programs in various stages of development.
    • Strong mentoring, collaboration and leadership skills and desire to encourage and coach staff.
    • Registered Professional Engineer (Canada) within applicable states or provinces where mining projects occur.
    • Membership in professional bodies related to geotechnical engineering, tailings/water dams, and international mining.

    Preferred qualifications:

    • Master's Degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering from an accredited university is preferred.
    • EOR or DEoR experience in tailings/water dams is preferred.
    • RTFE experience with Mine Owners will be an asset.
    • 25+years of progressive experience and proven ability to lead complex projects is preferred.
    • Excellent communication skills, including verbal, technical/business writing, electronic communications and presentations to a variety of audiences.
