In accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer Agreement, this is a full-time continuing position. Salary and compensation package will be based on experience.

Department Summary

About the Role


Reporting to the Faculty General Manager, the Academic Department Manager (ADM) supporting Biochemistry and Medical Microbiology & Immunology maintains an intimate understanding of the client areas and builds a productive and effective ongoing relationship, and networks at all levels of the organization and oversees the administrative operations of the Academic Departments.

The ADM is accountable for the management of the department's systems and processes, ensuring effective day-to-day operation of the department and manages a team of employees.

The ADM fosters an environment for continuous learning and performance optimization.

With the accountability to manage people, resources, and processes that support teaching, research and clinical innovation programs, the ADM leads departmental strategic planning; oversight of financial management; academic program administration; oversight of human resources management; governance; communications; and space and facilities management.

As the departments are within an academic medicine area with aspects of multidisciplinary research, teaching, and patient care, the ADM is required to be knowledgeable of policies and practices of the University of Alberta.

The environment produces unique complexity intertwining cultures, priorities, financial and human resource models, spread out across multiple sites and outreach locations, and at times the ADM is presented with conflicting expectations from a diverse group of stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the flow of operations/administrative information/data to the Academic Department Chair. Ensures information is accurate and timely for effective decision making.
  • Contributes professional and administrative expertise to the development of plans, objectives, solutions, policies and procedures.
  • Tracks key analytics and develops reports to support decision making. Responds to requests from the College or Faculty offices for financial and statistical information to support decision making.
  • Coordinates the creation of an academic plan to support the objectives of the department, Faculty and University including research, teaching, administration and clinical innovation.
  • Develops productive relationships with service partners assigned to the FOMD and collaborates with Service Partner (HR, Finance, Communications as examples) to support the Academic Department Chair and area supervisors on human resource issues (e.g., hiring, performance management, ER/LR, financial planning or budgeting and the provision of communications related solutions).
  • Collaboration with Directors of Education (Undergrad and Graduate),Director of Research, Faculty Office and faculty members to deliver educational programs for undergraduate, postgraduate and graduate programs. Participation in recruitment and recommendation of tenuretrack, academic, clinical academic colleagues, special continuing appointments, and support staff.
  • Monitors learner statistics to identify trends, using information in strategic planning processes and oversees learner administration services.
  • Leads and directs the department's academic administrative functions supporting faculty members teaching, research and clinical innovation activities.
