Active Living in the
Faculty of Kinesiology is currently seeking a Full-time Regular
Coordinator.


The University of Calgary's Active Living department is one of the largest and most diverse recreation departments based on a North American campus.

Active Living has a team of 40 full time and up to 600 part time staff.

On an annual basis our staff handle 47,000 registrations in over 75 recreational and sporting activities, and provide facility access to over a million users to our facilities:

North America's largest Outdoor Centre with climbing and bouldering walls, a gymnastics centre, an Olympic sized pool, a fitness centre with 200 m track, Canada ́s largest university racquet centre, five gymnasiums and access to the Olympic Oval.

The Outdoor Centre also provides its students and community over 16,000 outdoor equipment rental orders each year.

Active Livings vision is to enrich our community by providing exceptional experiences through our facilities, programs, and services fostering lifelong active living for all.


The Health and Wellness unit offers a wide range of programs and facilities to support individuals in the attainment of an improved quality of life and optimal health.

Programs and facilities in this area include fitness centres, group fitness, adaptive and rehabilitative programming, and personal and group training.

Facilities and programming are available to students, faculty and staff, and the general public. The area is led by a team of health professionals that include Clinical Exercise Physiologists and Kinesiologists.

The Fitness Centre is the flagship facility in the University of Calgary ́s Active Living department.

It boasts a minimum of 500,000 users annually, with approximately 67% of all University of Calgary students, 300 faculty and 500 staff using the facility each year.

The facility will admit 11,000-15,000 patrons each week during the peak periods.

This position reports to the Manager, Health and Wellness, Active Living.

This position is based on a Monday to Friday, 7 hours per day work week - though there will be times when the position is required to respond to operational concerns outside of normal work hours.

Peak periods run September-November and January-March.


Please note that this position will require moderate physical demands related to the organization, cleaning and tidying of the centre and its equipment.


Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Coordinates and supervises all operations within the Fitness Centre and associated fitness areas (High Performance Studio; Gold Fitness Alcove; Research Exercise Centre), suggesting and discussing improvement opportunities with the Manager, Health and Wellness
  • Builds and supervises a team of staff responsible for the successful operation of the Fitness Centre and associated areas
  • Ensures a positive customer experience by maintaining a professional, inclusive, and welcoming atmosphere
  • Oversees the cleaning and maintenance of the Fitness Centre and associated areas
  • Ensures the safety and security of all patrons, visitors and staff
  • Leads Fitness Centre staff, directing tasks and duties to ensure the successful operation of the Fitness Centre
  • Performs staffing functions including selection, training, and development of operational staff protocols
  • Holds staff accountable, coaching and mentoring staff; discusses and escalates performance concerns with Manager, Health and Wellness where appropriate
  • Creates and maintains a frontline staffing schedule that includes 35 floor supervisors (1 full time; 24 hourly) and 1015 hourly student staff, scheduling to ensure operational needs are met
  • Ensures administrative functions and day to day operations are within the guidelines of Human Resources and Collective Agreements
  • Promotes a collaborative team approach to the work environment through excellent role modeling and coaching by:
  • Building trust and respect through integrity and openness

  • Gaining compliance from others when required
  • Exhibiting a high degree of openness and objectivity to the views of others
  • Ensures that staff are an important part of all planning as well as process identification and modifications
  • Actively delegating to better manage workload by assigning tasks based on the individuals skill and experience, strengths and limitations and is clear in defining expectations and monitoring these tasks regularly
  • Making themselves available and accessible to their staff
  • Influencing others to perform better
  • Leads quarterly staff meetings and creates a relevant agenda
  • Oversees the cleaning and tidying of the Fitness Centre and other associated fitness facilities and ensures the completion of all maintenance and cleaning checklists
  • Ensures accountability in all cleaning and maintenance activities within the Fitness Centre and associated fitness facilities
