Job purpose
The Residential Counsellor is responsible for monitoring and supporting the residents of the John Howard Society.


Duties and responsibilities

Administration

  • Answer phones, greet the public and visitors with discretion
  • Attend staff meetings as required
  • Read all memos about the operation of the House and keep abreast of new developments relating to the Correctional Service of Canada
  • Maintain daily office procedures
  • Maintain resident's inhouse files and case notes on CAMS
  • Read flimsy file/OMS information on all residents
  • Develop Resident Action plans with residents and write monthly reports on each resident
  • Enter reports on the Offender Management System (OMS) and CAMS
  • Ensure ongoing collection of resident evaluations

Management

  • Ensure the House is not left unattended by staff and remain awake for the duration of the shift
  • Advise the House Director of House management concerns and infractions of House rules, curfews, or policies by residents
  • Act as a member of the counseling support team, exchanging information related to residents' concerns or direct the resident to appropriate resources
  • Pack up the personal property of suspended or unlawfully at large residents and prepare a written inventory

Client support

  • Establish positive communication with and maintain rapport with each resident
  • Develop, implement and sustain an intervention plan suitable to the proposed client, and encourage the client's interest and participation
  • Meet weekly (minimum) with each resident on the caseload
  • Assist with the general needs of the residents

Community Engagement

  • Maintain and facilitate communication with community resources and partners
  • Confer with the Manchester liaison Parole Officers

Qualifications

  • Experience working with vulnerable populations, including those with mental health, addictions, and developmental disabilities
  • The skills to understand the use of authority in supervision and to intervene effectively in crises
  • Twoyear certificate in a relevant field

Job Requirements

  • Correctional Services of Canada Enhanced Security Check
  • Emergency First Aid

Salary:
From $24.00 per hour


Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Weekend availability

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Victoria, BC V8T 2N8: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
