Organizational Status

Reports to the FINDER Platform Manager.

Will be expected to work independently once proficiency in basic virology and CL3 techniques has been established. Will provide supervision to junior technicians, and advice to researchers and Platform Manager. Wide latitude for exercising independent initiative and judgment in the performance of specialized duties and responsibilities.

Work Performed

  • Provides microbiology and immunology research services in a highly secure facility operating on a fee for service model.
  • Develops new small animal models and in vitro tests for assessing efficacy of novel therapeutics for emerging pathogens for pandemic preparedness.
  • Performs complex technical procedures.
  • Researches, designs and analyzes the results of novel experiments. Advises on the revision of existing research protocols for novel pathogens and provides guidance for the interpretation and analysis of research.
  • Provides analysis of experimental results as part of services offered at the facility using latest information available and stateoftheart equipment. Contribution may warrant possibility of joint authorship of scientific papers.
  • Makes development proposals to follow up on the results of preliminary experimentation.
  • Provides advice to the FINDER Shared Research Platform Manager for troubleshooting or problemsolving technical issues associated with working with novel pathogens or variants or challenges posed by new strains or variants based on either preliminary experimental results or experimental results obtained in other CL3 laboratories.
  • Collaborates with the FINDER Shared Platform Manager in the development of new techniques needed to address challenges associated with emerging pathogens for which little is known.
  • Supervises FINDER technicians participating in research projects delivered as a service for visiting scientists, external and internal users.
  • Liaises with other technical experts and may be called upon to provide advice in field of expertise.
  • Reviews papers and/or new protocols and develops standard operating procedures for new emerging threats in collaboration with the FINDER Shared Research Platform Manager.
  • Oversees the technical functioning of infrastructure in a Containment level 3 facility engaged in complex and groundbreaking research and liaises with maintenance experts, junior technicians and Platform Manager.
  • May attend scientific meetings and present posters and papers.
  • Keeps abreast of techniques and development in field of expertise.
  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
Consequence of Error/Judgement

Error in the operation of the CL3 facility would negatively impact users and significant research delays could be incurred.

Failure to maintain compliance with federal regulations and standards would jeopardize facility operation and potentially endanger the health of users.

Poor attention to detail and erroneous data will negatively impact on the progress and direction of research projects, including those performed by other lab members.

Valuable reagents, research time, and money would be lost. CL3 hazard requires proper adherence to safe work practices to control the risk infection with RG3 agents.


FINDER facility policy dictates loss of access privileges to the CL3 lab and ability to work by anyone contravening FINDER operational practices.

Loss of privileges will result if any of the following occurs:
1) Failure to follow directives provided by the FINDER Manager, FINDER Steering Committee, UBC Biosafety Committee, and UBC animal care committee.

2) Failure to follow approved Containment Level 3 SOPs.

3) Unauthorized after hours or weekend work

4) Working alone without proper authorization

5) Providing entry to unauthorized individuals

6) Unauthorized use of personal securi
