Job Information and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Director, Graduate Student Support and Recruitment, the Graduate Student Success Advisor will:
- Responsible for the accurate communication of and compliance with the academic policies of the graduate programs including student advising, faculty liaison and problem solving
- Acts as a primary contact for graduate students and advises graduate students on course selection, program options, graduation requirements and related issues.; Refers students to Program Coordinators or Associate Dean of FGSR when appropriate.
- Assists students with course selection to ensure they meet all program requirements in collaboration with Program Coordinators
- Makes recommendations to Program Coordinators concerning students' probation status, failures, and low QPAs (Quality Point Average) on a semester basis.
- Responds to daytoday problems as they arise and refers concerns to relevant parties for timely resolution.
- Guides students on matters related to university policy, Academic Regulations, processes and procedures (i.e. leave of absence, withdrawal procedures, refunds).
- Develops relationships with alumni to assist with Alumni department, the Dean and Graduate Career Services.
- Manages the scholarships, bursaries and awards process for graduate students; including making recommendations to faculty, the Senior Development Officer and FGSR as required by the terms of the scholarship and bursaries.
- Facilitates course exemption and transfer credit processes with Program Coordinators. Provides information concerning course registration, program requirements and academic appeals.
- Approves graduation audits and works with students to understand DegreeWorks or other program audit services.
- Oversees and helps coordinate student events such as, but not limited to the Bob Shaw Case Competition and the MTEI Durland Competition
- Maintains unofficial records on each student containing all correspondence between the student and the office and duplicate copies of official memos from other administrative officials.
- Advises all potential graduates of graduation requirements, especially pertaining to the submission of their major research Projects (MRPs), internships, etc. several months ahead of the convocation ceremonies.
- Participates in the development, revisions, and implementation of graduate program policies; Identifies and acquires information resources useful to graduate students and program coordinators.
Experience and Education Requirements
To be the successful Graduate Student Success Advisor you will have:
- An undergraduate degree in a related field such as Education, Business, Social Work or Psychology
- A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of directly related professional experience
- A collaborative, positive and professional approach to working in teams and with colleagues in a diverse and inclusive environment; demonstrated intercultural awareness and a commitment to principles of equity and inclusion
- Excellent organizational and time management skills; able to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines and negotiate changes in priorities as required.
- Professional judgement and discretion
- Highly developed written and oral communication skills, including strong facilitation /presentation skills
- Proven ability to be persuasive and to effect positive change while building strong relationships.
- Understanding of academic and administrative structures
- Demonstrated intermediate to advanced skills in using Microsoft Office, desktop publishing and communication software
- Assets for this position include a Master's degree and experience with CRM Advise
